RCC'er helps nab eBay counterfeit seller

There is a poster over on RCC who reported a counterfeit seller to the seller's local police department:

Reported

Apparently, this police department doesn't put up with such nonsense:

Busted!

So much for those "protests" on ebay's message board from this person that were posted here before.

I think it's very unfair of them to not give ebay credit for their tireless, anti-fraud prevention efforts which undoubtedly went a long way in shutting this person down. image

You know, this does potentially open up the door to bringing others to the attention of the police. If enough attention is created and recognition it may cause a few wannabes to pause and reconsider before starting.

Isn't this the one that was over on eBay chat claiming she was innocent, was framed, and that everybody was just out to get her?

The scammer posted this on the eBay board July 12:

First things first, all of the coins that we have sold are real!!! It's amazing that even though you all are coin dealers, that much is painfully obvious, you have absolutely NO idea what a genuine coin looks like. Then, in a bid to eliminate your compitation you resort to calling our house impersonating a police officer, Captain Moore of the US Navy you know who you are, and threatening to call the real police to report us for selling better then you. Also, without using names, lets calls them sheilaandjack, takes the approach of e-mailing everyone that buys anything off of us to harrass them and spread some more lies about us. And I quote "you should have your coin checked that you got from mbt7234. look at his ratings...he's doctoring copies and selling them as real...that's a violation of the federal hobby protection act. jack" This was sent to us by a customer of ours that thought this was strange and bordering on harrassment. We happen to have 133 positive feedbacks to go along with our 4 negatives. If you could see the pattern that we've seen in our negatives it would be obvious that these have been left by a little group of losers that have nothing better to do then harrass honest people that are trying to have a little fun and make a few dollars. Coin collecting used to be fun, now it's something that I really hate doing! Thanks for driving another one out of the hobby that you "love" so much. You will be happy to know that we will no longer sell on ebay, but DO NOT count us as another win for you! We are leaving because all the fun was sucked out of the hobby forever. It's really too bad that you couldn't be civil with your competition, that's where true success comes from. Please lose our address, lose our phone number, and stay out of our lives like we have stayed out of yours!! A WARNING TO ALL NEWCOMERS THAT WOULD LIKE TO SELL COINS ON EBAY, DON'T!!!! IT'S NOT WORTH IT!! THERE ARE MANY OLD GEEZERS THAT DON'T LIKE ANYONE SELLING BESIDES THEM AND THEY WILL USE ANY MEANS THAT THEY CAN TO DRIVE YOU AWAY! TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS, RUN FROM EBAY AND RUN FAST!!!!!

The cops released her after filing the charges. I suppose the next thing we will hear about is her filing a defamation lawsuit.

Like anyone else, charged with a crime, this person deserves her day in court. But...

I have a sincere admiration for all the honest coin dealers I've met over the years. (yes, they do exist)
I know that it's all too easy to rip an over-anxious newbie, or a "little old lady". There are quite a few professional dealers that spend more than a fair amount of time educating the coin collecting public, and I applaud those individuals for their efforts.

That's why I am very pleased when I read where a suspected scammer is charged with ripping-off coin collectors. If this person is found to be guilty, they should be made to suffer an appropriate punishment.

And a sincere thanks to the individual who reported this crime. Well done.

That or she'll claim to have been an abused child and that we should "support" her with a program of some kind.

I don't think she will get away with it. That post on the eBay board clearly shows her intent, and the fact that she was lying.

Don't you hate it when you are a dealer, and you forget to learn what a genuine coin looks like?? God, I HATE that!!!! image

I hope eBay will provide her with a free legal team for her defense.

This kind of action by the police will cut into eBay's profits for providing a venue for crooks.

I'm curious about the buyer in McHenry, IL. That's where I am (basically). I wonder if I know them. McHenry isn't a big town.
  • Wasn't this just this year that it happened?? The article about her turning herself in is Dated July 30, 2002, seems they charged her years before she sold the fakes if the dates are correct.

I believe that is a glitch on the paper's website. Here are the two auctions for the 16-D Mercury dimes:

    1st 16-D

    2nd 16-D

We are now making our auctions private bidding. This means that anyone can still bid on our auctions, but your eBay name will not be visible to other users. We do this to protect our customers identities.

No you slimeball, you do it to keep people from discovering your shilling, and to keep your suckers from being made aware that they are being ripped off.

I really believe eBay should not allow private auctions.

Agreed, especially when it's clearly obvious the seller is out to deceive potential buyers. I really think ebay needs to clean this area. They should have asked these kind of questions on that survey about a month ago.

  • If you click on the bid history of a private auction you will see that under User ID it says "private auction -- bidders' identities protected".

It doesn't say blocked. That might cast the seller in a bad light.
    It says protected.

    Protected from who?
    Well, you know who.

I think ebay should actually put the police article as a link as people go into the coin areas there.
    Maybe a warning to others.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

There are many legitimate uses for private auctions.

Private feedback, however, should be banned.

Agreed on both accounts, BUT... rarely does someone use a private auction for a ligitmate reason. The only seller I can think of who does is Anaconda.Rare.Coins... his coins are nice enough that a private auction ligitimately keeps spammers from sending mail to bidders. Others, though, like gottotoningcoins is just doing it so no one can tell his bidders they're bidding on crap.
