i was thinking detail was a xf40 but with the scuff marks VF20. is that fair to say?

My rule of thumb for grading these is if the field rub goes between the stars it's AU and yes the rub goes between the stars- AU58. mike

Looks more like UNC. detail with just a little too much rub to call it mint state- they must grade much harder in your part of the country

. Also I look for the halo of toning your coin has on the reverse to know it has not been dipped. The scratch by the eagles head is not bad enough to affect the grade on an AU58. mike

it's better than that

last question does it looked clean? would this be a coin PCGS would grade in the xf to au range? how harsh would they grade this

AU58 from the picture- again the halo of toning on the reverse is a good sign it has not been cleaned and if you can see the halo on the obverse periphery I would say you got a pretty nice coin. mike

so its a buy then on this coin. and i know the price was on the cheap end so i ran it by you all. and by your feedback ( often of how good you all are on guessing grades) i guess ill buy this one and then send it in to be graded. i hope its worth my money

i do but ive been taken advantage of by so many dealers in the past. that now i come to you all to get your opinion ( till i learn grades and till i am able to grade them close to what they are . )

see i thought this was a xf40 and net vf20. and i guess i was wrong. the xf40 seems low too. but i thought it was fair

Either the guinness is especially good this evening, or this has been a strange thread. In my opinion, you shouldn't even be concerning yourself with buying raw gold if you're not able to discern vf-20 from virtual mint state. Buy some books, and start doing some research....

I agree with Mike ( Darktone ). Its a solid AU 58 coin shown. The metal is soft enough to pick up small pock marks on the obverse, and the mark above EPU seems small enough for normal wear and tear on this barely circulated coin.

Solid AU58, with the money you spend, I also recommend the ANA and PCGS grading guides. Both are essential. If you can't afford both, get the PCGS guide, its more comprehensive., but there is a very good chance that you won't get either because you rarely listen.

Looks like a scuffy AU58, but not totally horrible. The melt value alone is around $94 as I type this. An AU coin for $125 sounds decent to me, whether it's scuffy or not.

It's a somewhat weak strike. It might grade MS, but not higher than an 61.

sigh. if i knew where to get such a great book id buy it. i have money on the side that i can probably afford how much is the book cost. the PCGS one. is it worth sending in to be graded?
think they be harsh on gradeing on think i might be impressed by the grade

I am sorry, I didn't know you were learning disabled. This explains why alot of dealers have taken advantage of you.
I would strongly recommend that you never purchase another coin that is not graded by PCGS/NGC/or ANACS. I would also recommend that you use a pricing guide like Coin World Trends and the PCGS price guide. Never purchase a coin above 80% of that. I would go into more detail, but that would be the only way for you to stay safe and not get into trouble.

id like to think its gonna be a long time but i figure i will be able to learn how to grade raw and then be able to buy. but i want the insight and other things that you all know.

coin world ill have to go to a book store for cause rite aid doesnt sell it.

i know as soon as a coin is graded it gives very little chance to find good coins cheap.

hmm... ive bought some graded ones. but didnt know about 80% of book.

ive just recently started in certain coins and higher coins. when i was younger i did loose change and rolls. but now im starting to look for semi keys and keys and hoping ill be able to find them cheap and if i can learn to grade raws then maybe i can.

how easy is it to find graded coins at reasonable prices

Oh my...Here's the skinny on buying gold for the beginner.

1. Read everything you can on the issue that you are interested in

2. Study the PCGS information on this site and get more and learn to grade from the slabbers

3. Go to some shops and get your mind right, get a feel for prices/grades/availability

4. Stay with slabbed coins for a while until you can tell what's what (i'm still on slabs)

5. Do not buy gold numist. material on impulse

6. Much better to spend a couple of hundred on used books than to eat one piece of gold for $400 (I should do verse huh?).

7. There are a lot of counterfeits and "worked over" gold coins out there and even seasoned people get a wound now and then, a newbie WILL get bit with raw, the only questions are when will the biting occur and how bad a bite will it be.

Get to be friends with a gold bug so he/she can teach you...that's how it is done!

To paraphrase a dealers wisdom that he shared with me that I will share with you:
"If you know what you are buying and you see it and you know the coin and what it is worth you are much more likely to be happy with it a year from now than if you buy a coin you don't know from someone you've never met for a price you don't understand."

Hope this helps, I'm new to it too but read 1-7 again, must become part of your learned behavior to stay alive with the gold bugs.

I just recently finished the new edition pcgs counterfeit detection/grading book, and I'm impressed with the quality of fakes that they see. A lot of the diagnostics they use require some pretty intense magnification, and some pretty specialized knowledge.... Slabbed gold only for me please!!

it might be a few weeks before i send this one in but i hope it comes back good.

yea so like i posted in another post i was flipping though some pages on another dealers site. and came across a 1853 Large Cent in MS65BN. i might jump at that instead of the 1903S raw casue this is a certified coin and hard to find. i wish i knew what i was getting into. ill be real disapointed on this 1882 gold coin if it comes back body bag or < Vf20
