Frankencoins- AT Experiment

OK, before you townsfolk start coming after me with pitchforks and torches, this was just done as an educational experiment. I am not planning on ever selling an AT coin.

I've been getting more curious about toned coins lately and have started to be attracted to them, but I am still not sure when a coin is AT or NT so I have been reading up on how coins are AT'd. I think I have the basics figured out. So last night, in the laboratory, I decided to try and unravel the dark secrets of the AT alchemists and give it a try with some circulated change I had lying around the house. I found it is pretty easy to tone coins, but that about 2/3 of them just come out brown or with black spots. The other ones come out kinda attractive, in a psychedelic sort of way. I kinda like the ones I made more than the AT ones on e-bay that I see mentioned a lot on this forum. Attached are pics of some of the more colorful ones. If anyone ever tries to offer you any coin looking similar to the ones attached, do not buy it unless you are into AT coins.

Thanks for looking,
MrSpud

Well, when you use "natural" means and leave them in favorable conditions it can still sometimes be market acceptable. Of course, the coins can also come out looking bad. I've experimented with that a bit and found most were blah and two were really cool. But as for applying things directly to the coin, I haven't tried that. But it is a good experiment to do, as you'll learn what to look for and avoid it in coins you buy.

So, what methods were you using with this batch? Some type of chemical and then baking? image

I tried Hydrogyn Peroxide, Garlic, Table Salt, and a layer of Aluminum Foil on a silver coin and wound up a dark brown and developed black specks almost immediatly when I added Table Salt ( I spreckled it on ). In hand it felt " sticky " and was able to wipe it off with a cloth. Naturally it ruined it and was a common circulated Franklin.
  • I've got an attempt on right now. I have a couple of Kennedy's at the bottom of my aquarium. They are covered in the blue colour small stones. They've been swimming for about 2 months.

I'll keep you posted. (If you see a couple of "MONSTER TONED" Kennedy's for sale for $5,000 each, pay no attention!!!!)image

I put a few in the toilet tank with one of those things that make the water blue.
That was a couple of years ago. I wonder if I should check them. image

Myqqy guessed the technique right. Basically I used a sulphur based mixture.

The purple color and color climbing the devices is a dead giveaway on ATed coins.
