Do coins tone in slabs?

Do they?

Does anyone have examples to show?

They can... it depends on the coin and the slab. For example, many older/green label PCI slabs have toned coins... this piece is in PCI holder labeled 100% white:

I've also got a "100% white" silver eagle with some fantastic toning... but the pic is being elusive image

Jeremy, do you think the coin was dipped and improperly rinsed right before it was slabbed?

Nice photo by the way. image

I was told yesterday that the in the old generation NGC slabs there is no seal between the paper label and the coin, thus allowing the coin to tone from the paper. Can anyone verify this tidbit of information?

I can't say for sure... if it were improperly rinsed, I wouldn't have expected the two colors like that...

I found the silver eagle (these aren't super hard to find if you're looking, anyway--many PCI eagles have toned up, and you can find them if you look hard enough)... the pic's not the greatest... my apologies

Thanks... I think I overcompressed the file... that and the upper right corner of both pictures doesn't have the color I want to show... oh, well... maybe if I have the coin and camera out sometime soon...

I believe a coin can tone in a slab, a reaction of some sort may have started taking place prior to slabing, and a slab may not be airtight...

however, I have a PCGs slab with a brilliant blast white frankie in a jar full of match books and loose matches and paper, a envoriment that is rich in sulphur, the coin has been in the jar for 4 months now, no toning what-so-ever has occured...

In the same jar resides a raw coin which has toned rather dark and ugly.

    Definitely,
I had an 1878cc Morgan with a perfect crescent rainbow on the reverse. Over the years the crescent disappeared as the colors spread across the reverse. This one was in a PCGS holder.

HEY! That might just explain some coins toning in slabs.

I can confirm that I've seen several NGC slabs where the label has slipped down out of it's slot approaching the coin. Until now, I'd never connected the two.
