so which opc hockey set is the most popular ?

so which opc hockey set is the most popular ?

i started a graded set of 71/72 as it was so popular with collector's, only to realize my favorite set was 70/71, so i switched gears and started 70/71 and just got around to listing the 71/72 set ( currently running item # 5111092137 )

70/71 opc set positives :

264 cards, big but not too big like a 396 card set.
great close up player photos.
6 different bobby orr cards as the cards reflect orr's best year when he won it all.
a few "cool" cards that are out of the norm : sawchuk memorial, bruins cup champs, the espo line.
as many quality rookie cards as most other early opc sets ? ( clarke, park, sittler, cashman, etc... )
one of the nicest ever opc all star card designs.
trophy cards included in set.

70/71 opc negatives :

poor photo of bobby orr card # 3.
some cards tough to find centered, not nearly as bad as 71/72 though.
psa 9 cards hard to find as most vending cards suffer from bleeding down one edge of card front from green card backs.

so...what is the most popular opc hockey set , or your favorite set and what are the positives and negatives ?

My favorite is a little more contemporary- the '85/86 OPC. I just like the simple design. The player selection is of the generation of players currently entering the Hall of Fame and includes a couple of heavyweight RCs (Lemieux and MacInnis). It's also MUCH more scarce than the '84 OPC set. Alas, finding second year PSA 9 cards of Neely, Yzerman, Andreychuk, etc is very challenging.

A close second is the '86/87 OPC set. Scarce, colorful, and a great player selection.

i will vote 81! it is full of hofer rookies and 2nd year hofers. lowe, savard, anderson, stastny x4,moog,kurri,coffey,murphy x2 and a popular hunter rookie messier, bourque, goulet, langway and gartner 2nd year. a simply design tons of action shots with pat ribble being in about 25% of the pictures and the super actions. did i mention 6 gretzky's? tough to find mint and centered and seems like a lower production run.

My favorite topps set is 79-80. I am thinking about going after the 71-72 opc. I see a tim horton psa 9 on ebay and i want it bad. I love the penguins and seeing that old school blue unny is awesome. The year is a little before my time, but i read about Horton and it's a card I gots to have. My favorite set would be 71-72 for opc.......
  • First of all a huge thanks to mostlyhockey for this link. Love hockey cards. I remember my first big sale I bought in 1988 a Terry Sawchuk 64-65 NM-MT tallboy for 7.50 lots of money in those days for a card. I sold it for 50.00 in 1992 thought I did good but now it looks as though a PSA 8 is selling for over 700.00 last time on ebay.

Any how my favourite set is the 54-55 Parkhurst love those star cards. A distant second is definatley the 81-82 OPC set with Denis Savard rookie and the Super action of Wayne Gretzky outstanding photo.
love to buy sell or trade graded hockey stars only, please to meet you and happy collecting
  • My favorite OPC set would be the 1970,71 set.

However my favorite all time set has to be the granddaddy of all hockey sets, the 51/52 Parkie. Talk about rookie cards, 104 of the 105 cards in the set are rookie cards (#75 is the only non rookie card in the set). Hall of Famers...WOW. They talk about the number of HOF on the current Detroit team, in 51/52, Detroit and Motreal each had 7. 28 of the 105 cards are Hall of Famers. It would be like every game is an all star game. I believe back then the a all star team played the prior years Stanley Cup winner in the "official all star game". You would have future Hall of Famers not being selected to play.

(My own opinion: Gretzky may have been one of the better players back then but would not be called the "Great One".)
  • Question?

I have a factory OPC 87/88 set...closed but not sealed. I have never looked at them. Are they attractive enough to break out? I figured the box was ugly so that represented the cards inside.

I think '87-88s might have the worst design of the decade. It's got a few decent cards, though, with the best being a Luc Robitaille rookie card. Then again, now that I think about it, that's probably the worst impact RC out of all the sets of the pre-Trade '80s. That or maybe Scott Stevens in '83-84. Not bad cards but most of the other sets between '79 and '88 have a major RC and/or tremendous depth of solid rookie cards.

I guess I'd give the '81-82 set the nod as my favorite O-Pee-Chee set. It doesn't have my favorite OPC design, but I like the look of the cards well enough and it's got a great selection of RC's and early cards of some real legends.

  • most popular is probably the '71-'72 or the 69-'70 set. both have pretty active competition on ebay and the Registry.

    my personal fave is 1979

  • got to go with 71-72 guy and dryden rc cool looking cards as well
  • If you want to get rid of that 1987 factory set let me know. I am partial to the 71-72 the 85-86 and the 80-81. My first set was a the 1979-80 set. I remember my dad buying three boxes for my brother and I when we were kids and cracking them all open. We were Winnipeg Jets fans so didn't care much for Gretzky. We traded all of our singles for our first 71-72 set.
  • The first set I ever "collected" was the 73-74 set. I used to line up the players in positions and, using a marble, "play" and announce hockey games. In the past couple of months, I began building the set again. Great year - Flyers first Cup. Great Orr and Dryden cards. Always loved the MacLeish.
