I have 1979, 1991, 2004, so I guess about every 12 years or so. I also managed to pick up a used Fell's coin book from 1949 (second printing).

Since they don't mint Morgans anymore what reason is there to buy one? That info hasn't changed in 50 years.

  • Every year. I know its hard to believe, but, for Territorials and Colonials, it's still used as a pricing reference.

    Every other year.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Mine's about 4-5 years old. Since I don't collect moderns, is there any reason to update it on a regular basis?

    I have a 1978, 84, 90 and 2002. That 78 looks like a pamphlet compared to the 2002.

Every damn year. I almost have the whole set. It makes a great read when you can't sleep. There's lots of changes over the years. OK, call me compulsive.

I had the 1980 and 1981 but, lost them along time ago. I now have the 2003 & 2004. I will probably get the 2005 sometime.
  • I think I have 1976 and 2000. I did have one from the 1990s and gifted it to my Dad.

I see people Ebaying really old copies. It might be fun to pick up a really old one.

image The 2005 Red Book has a lot of updated information. They added the MS-64 and MS-65 prices for Morgan Dollars. Of course the prices are already outdated, but I like it better. I saw a lot of other changes as well.

Every year. I love it. Great pics and a good overview of U.S. coins. And it's only about $12.

  • I just bought a 03 on clearance a week or so ago at a local bokstore because my 99 was getting pretty ratty.

I have the 2003 and that's it. I agree, they have some absolutely beautiful plate coins. The pricing is kind of pitiful though, for a so-called price guide. It's a decent reference though.

I buy them about every ten years. This year I bought a spiral bound 2003 model for $4. I really like the spiral bound over the hardcover.

    Every year.

I have a year complete set, without the varieties, from the very first one to the present. I usually buy a spiral bound one to carry with me to shows. The colonial part of the book still has a roll for pricing as well as the hard times token section.

If you have not seen the Red Book for several years, you should buy one this year because you will be pleasantly surprised. It is much improved over previous editions with some new more interesting text. Every beginning collector should buy one because it is best source for the money for general information.

I buy a new one every year and then almost never use it! Perhaps I should re-think this habit?
