Morgan Grading help...again

jmcu12jmcu12 Posts: 2,452 ✭✭✭
Thanks in advance....!

I am trying to find out how good/bad I did on this one.

1879CC What would you grade it as.

Notes: Although the scans do not show it, the overall color is uniform. There seems to be some rather translucent lustre, but I dont see any hairlines so I dont think it has been cleaned, just looks like normal wear.

What do you think?

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

    I'll go VF-30

    Maybe it has been cleaned?

  • Hi,

Overall, nice coin and great photo however... the image is around 500x larger than life. Yes, you can really see the details that way but, that's not really reality.

At that huge increase in size, I'd say VF-35 ... perhaps, just maybe an EF-40... if there is luster when viewed in hand with the naked eye or a 5 to 10x loop.

I'm sure it looks sweeter in real life... as for how you did??? ... you'd have to toss us at least a ballpark idea of what you paid for it.

    Enjoy,
    Anthony

I overpaid, I think, I may return it; I think it is overgraded.

<< <i>I overpaid, I think, I may return it; I think it is overgraded. >>

If you paid XF money for it -- or close to it -- you probably overpaid. There is a huge gap between VF and XF, so buying a raw XF can be risky unless you really know how to grade circulated Morgans. I think the coin is worth a premium over the standard VF, but that's still far less than XF money on the '79-CC.

Prices on these seem a little hard to judge. Vf30's have been selling at Heritage anywhere from $140-$250.

The pcgs one above sold for $264.

VF35 was my guess before looking. My guess is a VF30 would probably sell for around $300.
    When in doubt, don't.

ANACS put this as a 35. And I paid over $350.

I'm sorry, but in my opinion, I think it's disingenuous of you to have purchased a coin, which you evidently didn't do your homework on and "now" decide you paid to much ???

You may return it ??? Please, in my opinion, this coin isn't raw but PCGS graded ... Unless this coin was sent to you on approval why do want to penalize the seller for your actions ??? Evidently the price you paid was fine at the time. If you had any reservations about the coin don't bid or if you bouight from a dealer had him set it aside for you as you made up your mind. As is stand it seems an agreement was made and because now you feel you did something stupid you don't want to hold up your end of the bargin.

I think it's over graded ??? How much can a VF30 PCGS graded coin be over graded by ???

I'm sorry if I ragged on you too much. I've over paid on a few coins as others I'm sure. I was happy with the happy with the price paid even if I found out later I may have paid too much. I lived with it and learned.

Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone ..

Here is the most recent anacs 35 to sell at Heritage.
I feel your coin has a little to much wear on the wing to be a 35.Pretty much borderline 30-35,a nice 30 but a low end perhaps overgraded 35.
  • jmcu12jmcu12 Posts: 2,452 ✭✭✭
Um 4z.....perhaps you should READ my last post. It is ANACS, not PCGS, someone else posted the PCGS pic.

And, regardless, there is a return policy, therefore I am NOT breaking a 'contract'.....a return option is IN the contract.

And an over graded coin is an overgraded coin. Perhaps you feel tha I should take up the overgrading with ANACS?

If you can return it and want to I would do that.
Anacs very well might send the coin back to you as it is and you will have just spent more money.
  • I'm assuming you didn't buy the coin with you eyes shut. I hope you didn't just buy the coin without seeing it.

My point is you evidently were happy with the price you paid for the coin at the time. Yes ???

Evidently it was "overgraded" when you purchased it ... Why did you purchase it then ???

I hope you don't post every coin you buy for "help" ... I would in my opinion ask for help before you purchase a coin ..
That way you don't, again in my opinion, jerk around the seller. Return policy or not ...

There are a lot of buyers, and I'm sure some are on these threads that purchase coins with the express intention of sellin the coin for a quick buck and if they can't they abuse the return policies of the sellers and send them back. If the coin sells fine they "keep" it then ..

Makes no differance if graded by PCGS, ANACS, PCI if you were happy with what you paid .... If it was a "raw" coin you purchased as an uninformed buyer I might have more sympaty for you ... Enough said ..

These as with all my postings are my opinions.

You are correct, I did bid with my eyes open. However, and as most have said, you cannot fully judge a coin by a picture. And when I received it, I then became 'shakey' and decided to post it here.

Unfortunately I made a questionable move.

We disagree as to the remedy. That's ok. And if a return was not possible then I would keep my mouth shut. But since it is I think that I am going to take advantage.

I may be gruff but I do thank you zzzz.

    All the best.

if you bought it as a vf-35, you have nothing to complain about. ANY grading co. might go +/- 5 points at this grade level. what matters is, DO YOU LIKE THE COIN, i'm talking regardless of the so-called "grade". does it fit in your set? does it complement your other coins? THAT'S WHAT MATTERS!!!

personally, i think you should keep it (unless you REALLY "stretched out" for it). fact is that in a couple months, vf-35 $$$ is going to catch up anhow.

Thats a shame...anacs normally does pretty good with morgans...Return it if you have any regrets!
  • ziggy29ziggy29 Posts: 18,668 ✭✭✭
Some dealers don't allow returns on slabbed items. However, if a dealer gives a return policy on a slabbed coin and the buyer returns it in accordance to that policy, I see nothing unethical about it. Even if it's just buyer's remorse -- a return policy usually allows for *any reason* unless it states that only certain reasons for return are acceptable.

Now if a particular customer abused a return policy, I might stop selling to them, but that's another issue.
