Buying circulated 1895-S Morgans. Over and over and over....
    When in doubt, don't.

  • I got addicted to buying 1881S NGCMS67 Morgans. I ended up with 34 (YES 34) of them before I came to my senses. Buying that many was easy, but getting rid of them isn't. Now I only have 8.

Impulse buys that you have to justify to your spouse later. I'm still selling crap on eBay to raise money for a couple of my recent purchases.

I have difficulty focusing my collecting- I've got 4 strong areas of interest, and a couple others on the side. Plus, I sometimes buy duplicates that I don't need, but can't seem to say no to..... image

Killing time.. trying to buy 1897-O Morgans AU50 in all the slabs. Have PCGS, NGC, ANACS and PCI. Looking for SEGS and what ever other kind I can find. I really can't figure if I'm getting $500 worth of entertainment.

    This forum.
  • My worst habit has to be that I bite gold coins just to make sure they're real. Sometimes, with the coins being in slabs you often gotta bite harder and I chipped a molar gettin through all that nasty plastic. On a related sidenote, my dentist recently bought a new Corvette thanks, in part, to the repairs he had done on my choppers.

If you could have gotten to my wife back in April, she would of given you 2 she found out on my workbench outside! She was P.Oed One time for over 12hrs straight, everytime she wanted to check her email or do some work on the computer I'd be on her case to "hurry up! Another one is getting reading to end in 3 minutes!" One day I was on my tractor when the mailman came. I got 3 that day from Heritage. I put them in my shirt pocket and kept on bouncing around the pasture for about 20 minutes and went back to the house and immediately bought one from Barry Stuppler and JB Hamrick on eBay. Well, I broke myself of that finally. I started buying MS68s!! And yes name the grade and I got PLs too. (no 69s) And the stupidest, (AND I MEAN STUPID!!) thing I did was pass up a high grade NGC DPL! Anyway, in the not too distant future I will put them up here and across the street for sell. I have a whole PCGS Blue Box of MS65s! Oh, these are all 1881S Morgans.

That actually is kind of a problem. When I have the coins spread out on the floor in front of me, she absolutely has to walk all over them and sit on them, blocking my access to the coins. It's really weird.

My worst habit is going to coin shows 100 miles from home only to return after making less than $10 in aquisitions.

  • Buying ten of the same common date because each has different cool toning or is a pq specimen. I shall open up a museum dedicated only to 1884-O Morgan Silver dollars some day.
  • I am a coinaholic, I cannot stop buying gsa cc morgans. they are piled up all around me, some as high as 4 feet. I am loseing track of the ones coming in the mail!

Definitely guilty of the duplicate common date 'just because I liked the way it looked' type of purchase -- got a few too many 81-S morgans myself, looks like this is not the best place to find demand when it comes time to sell! Really, though, it might be *not* hanging onto some of my best stuff -- I'm a sucker for the cash I can use to buy more! I keep photos of everything I sell, even if I only owned it for a day or two, so it's kind of like I still have it in my collection.

  • Giving all of my profits away to children. First it was my children, and now my grandchildren. But in addition to that everytime I see a child that shows interest in coins (at a coin shop, at a show, at an auction and so on) I give them something. At the end of the year the bottom line isnt near what it could be. But I feel good, and I know that I made alot of children feel good.

    Have a Great Day!

I realized real quick that I couldn't afford rarity and quality together. So, I chose quality. With even the amount of money I spent on all my 81S from 65s thru 68PLs, I still wouldn't be able to scratch the person's foot who bought the 1889CC Morgan in MS68 that was up on eBay a couple years ago. The openning bid was over $500K!!!! The last 1881S NGCMS68 that I saw sold off Teletrade went for $3200! I almost bid on it but I have the 81S (s) I want now for my permanent collection. The 1881S Morgans are the best struck ones I've seen and I believe the 2nd most common.

Being too hard on myself when I spend less the $40 on a coin and later realize after closer inspection that it's been cleaned. I'm beginning to accept gently cleaned coins and as long as the investment is small, I'm enjoying the hobby more.
