Traditional collector

Reading the political signiture arguments on the US forum I compared the comments from some of the forum collectors with those of an elderly collector that I met yesterday while making my first attempt at flea market selling. The gentleman was a collector of mostly world coins, although he had some US gold and a nice US type set. At the close of the flea market, he approached me with some dark side type albums and we sat and looked through what I had along to fill his empty spots.

He filled me in on his collecting history, along with other aspects of his life and made arangements to get together and go through more of my coins. If I were to pick out an example of why coin collecting became the "hobby of kings", this man would fit the bill nicely. A gentleman in every way...softspoken, friendly, and knowledgeable, he was a joy to talk to. Whether or not we have political or religious differences will probably never be known, as we talked of our collections and enjoyed the conversation as such.

It concerns me when we turn chances to meet and learn from other collectors into arguments about non-related subjects...especially those subjects that can infuriate and alienate. I ask as a collector...can we please conduct ourselves on the collectors forums in a manner that speaks well of our hobby?

I read that thread and decided not to post to it. Think about all the time they spent griping about that OT topic when they could have been busy ignoring them and writing about coins.

I agree Blackhawk! I too have read the posts and have chosen to stay out of them. As a musician I have performed all types of music from other cultures. To a true music lover there is no color and no political or religious differences. Music crosses all lines of divison. The same can be said of those who are true collectors of coins. Look at our forum we have many from different lands that post here and share their love of coins with all of us. And I have to say that outside of a few jokes and some friendly ribbing I have yet to see the types of posts here that have been found lately on the U.S. forum.

But unfortunatelly I coudn't say, that, for example, in local coins club all the dealers are similair to that Gentlman, you have decsribed image May be , because most of them are not collectors, while a few I knew about them that they are also collectors and not only dealers, they really are very friendfull and interesting guys. But, please do not understand my remark as something negative against dealers at all, or in common sence, I just told here about some things, that might be just personal and subjective opinion and sorry if looks as something negative.

As for the US forum, I NEVER post to any other forum, except that one!

"Lately"???? Why do you think I haven't posted much on the US Forum for the last two years? I got tired of skimming through all the junk to find the pearl. Also, of the actual coin-related threads there, I got tired of all the discussion of whether a coin should or would "make 66" or some such. Remove those and maybe 10% of the threads (and perhaps half the posts even on those) are worth reading ... and none of them come with a sign indicating which are which. image

It's just getting progressively more surreal to me.

Perhaps we're being naive to think that the growing divide out in the "real" world, won't somehow spill into here.

When insult replaces insight--there ain't no dialogue to be had.

This is OUR only sanctuary left and WE must keep it that way.
