new to coins, need help!!!

coins are fun for me, but considering that im in my teens and spend most of my money on either hanging out with my friends or baseball cards i really dont have enough money to buy a metal detector to have that much fun with it. I have the little plastic thing from years ago from a spy kit thing that i got as an 8 year old birthday present or sumthin. i know that wheaties and and indians are nothing for all of you who own metal detectors and find all these huge finds but for me they actually are. My dad once was at the YMCA and he was talkin with the old guy who lived upstairs and i think owns the place and he sold my dad about 12 Indians and he gave them to me when he came home that day and i was so happy. over the years ive looked in my change, my parents' change, and anything i find if its rare or old or anything like that i keep it. is there any solution for me to be able to find or get some coins somehow so i can start a collection up? i just love to find things, no matter what it is i love to find it. do you think that plastic thing would work? what should i do to get a real MD? i dont care if its the lowest end of all "real" metal detectors, i just want one that i know works and that i know i could use. please, any suggestions at all would be a great help! thanx

  • ..............why????????????????
  • imageThere are 3 companies that make good detectors. Garrett, white, and fisher. With anything else you will dig junk all day. The cheapest of the 3 brands will run you $200-$250, but will be worth it if you are serious about detecting.

    Have a Great Day!

    p.s. detecting for 35 years.

Welcome to the hobby, have your considered outright purchasing coins rather than metal detecting?

Not a pointless question. If you're really interested in Metal Detecting, I'd suggest you send a PM over to LordMarcovan, he has lots of great stories, and can give you loads of advice. Who knows, maybe he'll hook you on the holey vest idea image

Also, if you like Circulated Low Grade Indians, why don't you get a folder and start filling it up? Most common dates are very cheap in low grades. A couple bucks really at the most. Just a couple key-dates and semi-keys that are harder to find will be more expensive. image I hope this has helped you out, and welcome to the forums image

  • yes this hobby is really fun for me but just buying the coins plain takes away the funimage for me finding things is my special thing. lol i know this is gonna sound a little stupid for a teen but i like to check out tag sales, clearouts, shows, ebay, everything. if you check out my ebay feedback youll know ive been doin this kind of stuff for a while (baseballyankeesrule). ill try to save up for a metal detector, but its very tempting to buy o ther things with some of that money in your hands lol. if anybodys willing to help me out with good advice, nice hunting places, or just anything that you think would be a help to me id be really happy to listen! thanks everyone for their help and hav a good day

Then put me on there. A new poster, with a SPAM logo, no less, writes: "I have the little plastic thing from years ago from a spy kit thing that i got as an 8 year old birthday present or sumthin. . . . do you think that plastic thing would work?" Right, a "plastic thing" from a "spy kit" received as a "birthday present or sumthin" is going to detect coins. What's more, this gets bumped just two minutes after the original posting at 11:30 p.m.

It's fairly obvious I thought the post was a ruse, so to draw any conclusion about this being the "way you treat new collectors" is an overreaction. If I was wrong, welcome.

Save your money and get a Whites DFX. Only detector I will use....absolutely outstanding performance in every way. It's not cheap but it's MORE than worth saving for.

    ps. Halo Rules!
