Agree with all the comments and want to reinforce the kudos to NGC for picking this up. Really nice effort on their part.

It should be very interesting to see how this plays out. Has the thief been exposed yet??

  • I sure hope they nail the thief to the wall (by his nads). Hopefully they will put this guy away for awhile so that their will be one less thief amongst us.

    Congrats.

  • Thanks for all the kind words. I had a pleasant surprise yesterday when the 1919-S NGC 67FH showed up by registered mail from NGC. I thought they were going to give it to me at the show later this week. I am glad they did it this way for I would have hated for the coin to get lost againimage. After speaking to the submitter of the coin I am dissapointed to report that it looks like we have hit the end of the rope as far as finding out who took it in Orlando. He told me he purchased it at the Long Beach show from a gentleman for cash and did not get the sellers information. image. I don't know where to go from here. Anyone have any ideas?

    Dave,

Will you be having PCGS put it back in their holder?

Can you tell us how much he paid? With such kind of quality coin and rare date, even it is raw, it will go over $10K cash. Do you believe his story?

Hopefully the submitter who paid $ (I have no idea as to whether it was a suspiciously low price or not), learned a valuable, if somewhat costly lesson here.

David, congratulations on receiving your coin back. I remember only too well how upset you were at the FUN Convention after the coin went missing. How someone can buy a high grade raw coin for cash and not obtain any type of I.D. from the seller is totally beyond me! In my opinion, the submitter's story stinks to high heaven.

I really don't want to get into what I was told on the phone in any more detail than what I have already done. This is a very delicate matter and I don't want to be accused of misinterpreting anything I was told. I will try to talk the submitter into coming here and telling you all in his own words exactly how he came in possession of the coin.

The story told by the submitter about paying cash to an unknown seller is simply not credible.
  • coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
Gemtone65, it might not sound credible but I have heard of many such instances.

I'm not saying that the buyer shouldn't have been on notice that something was amiss, only that things like this happen. I'd be curious to know what price was paid, what story the seller told the buyer, etc. I also hope Dave can persuade the buyer to post his side of the story here.

Can I get his name and number? I know of a bridge for sale - cash deal.

Let me guess....the suspect is about 45, 6 ft tall, average build, brown hair, brown eyes, white...you know, just your average, blends into a crowd kinda guy. Probably wouldn't recognize him again if he saw him...at least until they pull the next job.

That would make sense. They are obviously the experts in matters like this. I am currently gathering all the information to present to them.

The submitter of the coin has contacted me and we are trying to track it back to the person that took it. For now, I am just pleased it was not damaged or dipped. It is as pristine as it was when I first purchased it. There was no insurance coverage for the coin as it was classified as a mysterious disappearance.
