Help with grading -- WLHs

Picked these two up today. I've never collected or tried to grade WLHs before. Any guesses as to what they might grade if slabbed? ( Not that they will -- they're going into a Dansco Short Set but I'm curious anyway.)

the bottom 43 appears to be the nicer coin. The coin on top is poorly struck. Notice the hand of Lady Liberty on the lower 43, you can see full thumb hand split/seperation which is lacking on the soft strike coin on top.

very tough to grade from images, both coins appear to be mint state with the 43 being the nicer grade, however, i maybe seeing some rub on the Eagle on the reverse, not sure....

    Top: MS63
Bottom: MS63 (MS64 if those spots on the left obverse aren't so obvious)

Yeah, they only really show on the photo.

Kinda strange. Might have been the lighting angles.

Both appear overdipped. #1 slider to 63. #2 looks cleaned enough to warrant a BB. My gut says these are just bad pics......nicer than they appear.

Actually neither has been dipped and both have an original skin to them. I hate that blast white dipped look most WLH have. I chose these mainly because they didn't looked dipped out. The pics make them appear more white than they are.

  • actually i think the 46 has the better split thumb.

You're correct Proof about the thumb on the 1946, plus the thumb is more rounded.... I would also add that the head detail is much nicer than the 1943, and appears to be close to fully struck....

The 1946 is not as common as one might think in well struck, or fully struck condition as sasy the 1943 and 1941 issues... As for the grades it would be impossible to grade these two coins from these scans, except to say that they appear to be mint state, but would also add that they have to many marks and ticks to be more than 63's or 64's, IMHO.

Both coins have been dipped. Ror that reason I don't think that you will get better than MS-63 on either one although the absence of marks might make them look like MS-64s. You can be certain from images, but I would say that the 1943 might not grade any higher than MS-62 because dullness from dipping. The 1946 might catch an MS-63, but it could be a close call.

Which hand is it that we care about, anyway? I'm not too familiar with Walkers' grading.

Lawman - it is Liberty's left (to viewer's right) hand and thumb that people make reference to.

They definitely looked dipped to me. They can have a "skin" and still be dipped. Just not an original skin.

I understand it's tough to tell from images... but usually with these the original skin will indeed show up. I'm seeing dipped out coins IMO. I do love Walkers and collected them for many years.

63 and 64. Too many hits on the skirt and a nice bagmark on one of the rays of the first one to make 64. However give them to SEGS and they'll both be 69's! LOL

I would say 63 up top and 64 below. Both coins appear to be original.
