1980's hockey.....BGS vs. PSA

Hockey guys,

I've been told that BVG or BGS 9.5 rookies in the 80's
will sell better than PSA 10 rookies of that same player.

Is this true ?

Also, it seems that BGS/BVG gets some pretty decent
action on high grade cards from the 80's.

Anyone have some decent insight into this other
then just bashing BGS/BVG for grading cut up sheets.

  • PSA 10's sell for far more than BGS 9.5's. only problem is, 10's rarely show up for sale. i've seen huge premiums for PSA cards-
    PSA 10 Yzerman- $2200
    BGS 9.5- $1200

i've seen the same for other guys like Hawerchuk, Lemieux, Hull, etc.

BGS 9's usually sell for higher than PSA 9's though, unless the card happens to be low pop or rarely offered for sale (Bourque, Coffey)

Beckett also grades sheet cut cards, whereas PSA does not. Most of the BGS and BVG 9 and 9.5 hockey cards I've seen have super smooth edges.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

  • Yes, I agree with the masses. As an Avid 80's collector be very careful of BGS 9.5 and even 9's for that matter. I have bought some in the past and have cracked them out of their cases and sent them in to PSA. All of them have come back as trimmed. I have had much greater success with BGS 8.5. Beckett puts such a huge premium on the edges being razor sharp that most of the "wax" singles don't get high grades due to thier rougher edges. As a rule of thumb I was once told that if all the grades are 9.5 other than the surface there is a good bet it is sheet cut.

    Just my two cents.

    Cheers,
    Darren
  • Just tried to cross over 2 BGS 9.5 cards to PSA, both came back "EVID TRIM". Then cracked another and tried it, same "EVID TRIM". I have been 0 for 3 in trying to cross over. They are fantastic looking card though. Just can't get them on my registry!

  • 1981 Kurri, 1984 Verbeek, 1984 Yzerman. I sold the Kurri and Yzerman for what I originally paid which worked out well, the Kurri I have not sold yet, may send back into BGS to get reslabbed a 9.5 and then sell. They just don't sell raw.
  • Marc,

Not to change the topic, but any word on the Sawchuk puck sticker you were trying to find?
