So I gotta wait till the next show, but I am considering buying from ads in publications such as Numismatic News.

You can buy from ads in numismatic news, but you can't buy from ebay?? I think you can get jacked just as bad from printed ads as you can from online sources..... image

  • That's some good advice from your Dad. I think I need to follow his advice as well.

    Scott,

Your Dad is very wise in not wanting you to bid on ebay. Ebay is a very risky place to buy coins. However, he may not be aware of the dangers of buying from many of the Dealers that run ads in Numismatic News. There are many bad dealers placing ads in that publication and unless you have recommendations from other collectors, I would not buy from many of them. Your best bet is to go over to the Buy, Sell, Trade forum and let the folks over there know what you are looking for. There are many trustworthy folks selling on this forum and through some searches you can quickly learn who are the most respected. You are more likely to receive coins that are correctly represented here more so than ebay or Numismatic News. Good Luck with your collecting.

Yeah, my dad doesn't like computers or the internet or cell phones.

Use ebay as a tool, know the risks, do your homework and take advantage of it.
You don't have to tell him where the coins came from. image

There are plenty of top-notch sellers on eBay. There are also scumbags.

    Oh, well.

Im not bouncing around. What makes you say that? Im working on the Roosie set, my Capped Bust Half Dimes, a Type set album, and im filling up some canadian albums, from circulation. I just wanted to buy on Ebay cause thats where all the Roosies are dirt cheap at. Although I have been asking many questions on all sorts of things, just to get an idea, or to full fill that need for the question to be answered.

  • I am gonna try to talk to my father about buying from trusted forum members. I suppose, I could do it myself, I really don't actually need him, all I need is a money order and some stamps.

You also need a credit card and a parent's permission to use eBay if you're under 18 and want an account.

I find the best way to buy on ebay is to know the seller. Obiously, check out the feedback and if there were other ID`s used and also their other auctions. E-mail the seller about a coin. See how they respond and if you feel comfortable working with them. Take the time to make sure EVERYTHING is right! Sometimes you can find the right coin for the right price.
