Toning Experts: Should this one go to NGC for the STAR, or PCGS?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm debating on sending this to either PCGS or NGC. I think it may be STAR worthy with NGC and their white holders show off color better. Then again, PCGS is slightly more appreciated.
What would you do?

I don't understand how there can be so many modern coins with more "monster" toning than most proof or mint state coins made 100+ years ago.

How much of this so-called monster toning on moderns really *is* natural, anyway?

It would more than likely get the body bag from either in my opinion.image

Edited to add: ACG might give it a DCAM69*image

Yes... but I'd like it even more wrapped in plastic.

  • And the answer is! Neither PCGS or NGC. Why not? Because it aint going into one of their peices of plastic. Even if it was real, which I dont think it is, they would be too fearful to slab it. Save your money and be happy with an Andy Warhol original fifty cent coin! image

Pat, I'll give you 99.9999999999999999999999% odds that the coin doesn't make it into NGC or PCGS. The colors look all wrong, and it looks like it was done with chemicals and possibly some heat.

Careful, someone is sure to slab it. I may even put it in a CoinWorld slab for him with a grade of MS69*. image

Even in the rheummy eyes of an old bear, Pamela is..............well...........rather.........spectacular.

In the coin hobby and Industry, there must exist a great deal of trust and confidence to

stabilize the coin market and prices. Thing that add to that stability are the 1st tier, third party

grading services, ethical , long established coin companies, both large and small, Forums of ethical

collectors and dealers such as we enjoy here and an efficient system of auction houses and cyber autions and sales.

What is detrimental to the hobby is the presence of coin doctoring, exhuberent grading and the continuing element

of individuals that participate and condone practices that are less then savory.

While the by words are still" Buyer beware , caution and education", this is still a hobby. It is supposed to be fun and fun requires

elements of joy, learning, friendship , adventure , excitement, satisfaction and even.....dare I say it,........gasp.....profit.

Things are better now then they were in the 50s, but it is still a bit of the wild west out there in coin land, for the inexperienced.

I think that the creation of a toned coin club, is an important step to educate, inform and eventually play a role in limiting the

destructive artificial enhancement of our coinage. Progress is being made, slow, but progress.

Braddick, I am suprised you think it will slab. Sorry to say I am with evreyone else, I don't think NGC PCGS or ANACS would slab it. If you are going to take a chance on artificial stuff, I'd go with P. Anderson. She would not slab either, but who cares. image Sorry to the ladies here. image

ANACS would... they'd label it AT. I'd bet even PCI would red-label it

Ok, I get the subtle impression that PCI may be the way to go (even with their RED Label).
