Nice piece Stuart. However, knowing you, and the quality coinage you possess, it somewhat baffles me to see you with a mere 86-O in AU-58.image

Razor: I saw this particular coin on Heritage's web site, and liked the original look of the coin, and the fact that it does not have any major distracting marks.

By my way of thinking, keeping in mind my "Best Value Grade" philosophy of coin purchasing, the coin has nearly the eye appeal of an MS-63, and this particular coin jumps from $400 in MS-60 to $3000 in MS-63.

I was able to acquire this coin at less than half of the lower MS-60 price, and fill a hole in my Morgan Dollar Set... image

    Razor,

The 86-O is a significant rarity in Uncirculated grades. Look what the go for in 65!!

    It isnt like the 85-O...

    Stuart,

That's a nice 1886-O. The thing that impresses me most is that it actually is an AU-58. In other words, most AU-58's that one sees in slabs are actually AU-50's in my opinion.

I have an 1886-O that I need to liberate from a PCI slab. It says AU-58, but I personally say AU-55.

Generally, when it comes to Morgans, if there's no way I can afford at least an MS-63, I look for nice AU-58s.

Nice detail and few surface marks. Why does the rim look so rough is it just the picture?
  • StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ron & Don: Thanks for the compliments on my (nearly image) new 1886-O.

Placid: The coin rim looks normal in the original higher resolution image, and only has the rough "scalloped" look in the <50 kbyte reduced files size version that was small enough for me to post on the forum.

If memory serves me, the best I attained with the 86-O was AU-53. May've been 55. It's been a while.image

nice coin! I don't have any 19th centuary morgans. I only have a 1921 (the common date) in mint state.

Stuart, Very nice coin. The 86-o is extremly difficult to locate with toning, nice job. Here is a photo of my 86-o

    My [PCI] AU-58 '86-O salutes your AU-58 '86-O.

This is the one I spoke of earlier. It's entombed in PCI, but it's another green-slab, ten-digit PCI slab. I think it would cross at 55 if not 58.

    << <i>PCGS AU58: >>

Dang, that's a beaut for a 58! I don't see any rub. It must be above the ear.

This is why I prefer AU-58s to sub-63 MS grades in most cases. This is much nicer than just about any MS-60 or 61 you'll ever see.

There are rubs on both the obverse and reverse, but they didn't come out in the image. That coin came from an old collection that was housed in Wayte Raymond albums. I bought that three years ago, and had to pay nearly MS60 money for it.

As well you should. This is a far nicer looking coin than any MS-60 Morgan I've ever seen.

Doop: That's a beautiful 1886-O in PCGS AU-58!!! Someone made a great pickup for the starting price of $250 with no bidding competition...

I just received this 1886-O ANACS AU-58 in the mail which Heritage Got to Me in 1 Day!! It was ordered at lunchtime on Friday, and was delivered via U.S. Priority Mail within 24 hours of the order. Well Done Heritage !!

By the way, in person the coin looks much better than the photos, and has the eye appeal of an MS-63 coin with a full strike and a whole lot more luster than in Heritage's photos image I will try to take some photos of it over the weekend to share with my fellow forum members.

I am extremely pleased with this one!! image

I sense a trend here. Stuart trolls for anacas coins that have a chance at crossing.

    The 1886-o looks solid.
