Help me grade this raw Morgan

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have had this raw common 86 Morgan forever and could use some opinions on the grade. Looks to me to have been dipped many years ago ,but does not look touched otherwise. Don't think it would bodybag ,but I don't think I would ever send this in. Just curious about the grade.

Assuming the lustre is good, MS64 (if it's not really flashy, 63)

  • MS62/MS63/MS64 depending on how bad the cheek looks in person.

Looks like a 64 to me
  • 64 unless that cheek is worse in person

AU-58 if that's rub on the cheek; probably a somewhat weak 64 if not.

Cheek looks good in person. There are 2 small scratches on the lower cheek/jawline and 1 small scratch under the glare. The fields look a lot better than the exaggerated image, and lustre is good Jeremy. Darktone- Where do you see rub?

  • I don't see any rub.I'd say 64 from the look of the pics.

With good luster, I would also venture a 64......... image

All depends on the luster and how prominent the marks on the cheek are - With great luster, clean field (I assume those are not scuffs in the field) I was say PQ 64, with a slight possibility of a 65 - if the coin is dull and lifeless probable a 63/62

well that about covers the spectrum 62-65 depending on how it looks in the fleshimage

  • Let's assume no bodybag for the long since past dipping. Let's assume no cheek rub. Now we are in the uncirculated world.

Surface preservation is certainly good at the least / very good at the best... Say 3.5 on a scale of 1 to 5
Strike is excellent to superior... Say 4.5 on a scale of 1 to 5
Lustre is fair... Say 2.0 on a scale of 1 to 5 (it may be better in person, but all I have is the picture)
Eye appeal is good... Say 3.0 on a scale of 1 to 5 (it may be better in person, but all I have is the picture)

    Using these four criteria... MS-62

If lustre is a little better and eye appeal is a little better than the picture portrays, then you have MS-63.

If lustre is a lot better and eye appeal is a lot better than the picture portrays, the you have MS-64.

The strike of this coin is by far the best feature based on the picture.

ms-66+, but that's a really weird digi-pic for some reason.

Looks to have been thumbed on the cheek area along with a little high point wear puts it in the au58 catagory for me. mike
