Question about toners......

This question is about "Super toned" Morgan dollars...Why is it that far out toners are generally found on common date Morgan Dollars? Yes, I know there are some exceptions regarding the GSA CC Morgans, but I've never seen really cool toning on "KEY DATE" Morgans ie; 92-CC 93-S (Which there are only a few that I'm aware of in MS condition) 93-CC and so on and so-forth. Your replies are appreciated.image

  • Most of the "monster" toned Morgans are mint-bag toned, and some dates, notably the early S, P, and O mints, had a much larger "bag" (unused) population, because too many were struck, and very few were actually needed for circulation.

Only thing I can think of is there are more of the common date morgans around than key dates. Maybe the percentages of toned $ are the same for commons & key dates but the proportion of commons to key dates is very great, making it harder to find toners in the dates you mentioned.

My personal belief is there are many coin doctors that have learned how to AT so well that even the experts can't tell. They can only succeed on about 25% of the coins so they only use common dates. Too much risk on key dates. I know this is not a popular position but it sure seems the population of toners has increased wildly over the past 5 years. It could be the prices bringing so many to market but I really do think we are all being scammed by the doctors out there. This is just my opinion based upon what I have observed. I have no direct facts to support this opinion. Go ahead and flame away. I have stated my opinion and that and 55 cents will buy you a cup of coffee.

I would speculate that the better dates (89-CC, 84-S, 93-S, 95-O, etc) were actively sought and put into collections - thus stored in an environment not conducive to spectacular toning, whereas many of the high pop common dates sat undisturbed for 30-50 years in bags in an environment that resulted in sometimes phenominal toning (but also resulted in some really FUGLY toning) -

Another factor may have been that a few years ago "white" coins seemed to get the bump on grades from several of the major grading services - so human nature being what it is lots of key dates got dipped as that's what the "demand" (ie the higher prices) was at the time

Another disconcerting area of toned coinage are those deemed "Endroll," yet they're toned on both sides.image

I agree with Kyle--the common dates were the ones with mintages exceeding needed amounts. Thus, they were the ones that hit the bags.
