New Camera day/ First images

Just when I got used to the C5050 my Canon Digital SLR arrived today. I gots to learn all over again. Here is the first image

Thanks! On the bust half I only used one regular white light bulb about 2 feet above and a little in front of it. With my old camera I was only a few inches away from the coin and not much room for lighting. With the rebel and a macro lens I am at a foot away from the coin and it fills the image. I need a longer copy stand, I don't I could fit a dollar sized coin in one image.

The best part is that bust half is just the camera, macro lens and one light. No tilting the coin, no angled glass, just shot straight on and still captured all the colors.

May I ask about the white background?
Do you take the image with it or change it with software?
Can't seem to understand how you get this great look.

I do a circular crop around the coin in Photoshop and get rid of the background. Then add the white background (or whatever else I want to use for a background), put obv and rev in one image and then add drop shadow.

The coin to camera distance is what you really notice with the SLR's. Makes lighting much easier. Can actually get some color from straight on.

I'm using the same setup (Canon Digital Rebel and Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens). It's awesome for imaging coins! Good job on the pics!!!

Taking photos of coins from a foot or two away from the coin is so nice. No more shooting toned coins at an angle. It's definitely the way to go.

I'm using an old Velbon tripod, but I'm looking into a Bogen tripod with a pivital head. It should prove to be much better for setting up images.

What shutter speeds and f stops are you using?

I usually shoot at slow shutters speeds (1/4 second or so) an f stop of 10 or higher and iso 100.

What type if lighting are you using to get such nice results on the toning? I've been using GE reveal and setting the white balance manually. It's been giving pretty decent results.

BTW, your first day with the new setup is yielding some pretty impressive results. I haven't yet regretted the $$$ spent on this system. The detail is phenomenal and the ease of use is great as well.

Your images are awesome. I deffinately have to learn to use this Camera better and play with the settings.

I may go to Home Depot and Look for Inspirational materials to build one a new copy stand.

As for settings I have not ventured beyond the auto settings yet. I will play more this weekend. I used one regular light bulb in front and above the coin along with the Camera's auto flash.

Continued nice images. I typically use two light sources above, maybe 10 and 2 o'clock. Sometimes a third one at 4 to 6 o'clock is also useful. I typically shoot at around f3-5, allowing faster shutter speeds, seems to be sharper, but I'm a detail junkie. At those apertures you have to have the coin focused just right and the camera aligned well, no angle allowed or you'll get something out of focus.

Thanks for the info.
I ran into the same problem needing a longer pole.
Couldn't find the right pole.
I put a block of wood between the base of the pole and the bed.
Worked great but now it won't work for my Nikon 4500.
Thought this might help.

Bill -- that extra distance should help with copper lighting too, especially RBs and BNs.

At this rate, it's only a matter of time when the images are nicer than the actual coins.

BN used to be terribly hard now they're fairly easy. This is becoming one of my favorite shots.
