From rcc about the fake 1793 cent on eBay

Someone apparently contacted the local police where this seller was operating and received this reply, which they posted to r.c.c:

Mr. [names deleted]:

I am Detective Gibb with the Brookfield Township Police Department. Thank
you both for your emails alerting us to a possible fraud taking placing in
Brookfield Township. I reviewed the information provided by both of you and
found the seller to be using some highly questionable practices. In the
State of Ohio we have law called Criminal Simulation - 2913.32 (A) that
would fit the selling of coins purported to be authentic that are in fact
not.

In light of the information, I opened an investigation into the allegations.
I was able to make contact with the seller via telephone who I met
personally with at the police department. I saw the coin in question and
there is a definite suspicion that "COPY" was obliterated from the coin. It
was portrayed to police that the seller bought the coin in that condition.
The seller did not take responsibility for alteration of the coin or for
knowingly representing the coin as authentic when it wasn't.

At this point the seller was advised that police have been made aware of
allegations of questionable business practices by the seller taking place on
EBay and that common sense would deem that the seller should have some kind
of system in place to verify the authenticity of coins that are portrayed to
be authentic. Basically it boils down to, there is not enough evidence to
charge her with a crime, but she was advised the police are aware of her
activities and take the allegation of fraudulent practices taking place in
our community VERY seriously.

Note that before after a message had been left for the seller to contact me,
cent piece auction in question was pulled.

Thank you for your concern and if you have any further questions, please
feel free to email - detgibb@brookfieldtwp.org

Wow, kudos to the Brookfield Police Department! I bet there's a seller who wishes she lived somewhere else right about now.

Hopefully that will put enough of a scare into her so she will cease her fraudulent activities. I must confess to being a sexist in this case - my presumption was that the seller was a male, not a female.image

And again, thanks to each of you who took the time and trouble to report her to Ebay and/or to the authorities.

I found this purchase of hers somewhat interesting.

I imagine her, sitting in front of her computer, gorging on chocolate and planning her latest scam. What a sad, sad womanimage

As well as about a half dozen others that we know of! As far as I can tell forum member MJH is the guy who first scooped this story, he posted this seller's COPY 1877 cent back on June 27th. Kudos to all involved.

Speaking of which, if some poor sod actually *bought* that 1877 copy and paid for it, I'd like to think the police could charge her for selling fake items, and at very minimum demand a refund to the buyer in order to avoid pressing charges.
  • Shouldn't the "coin" in question have been confiscated ?

I'm not familiar with the law on this, but I would think since it's been altered to appear genuine that it would be illegal to posses it. image

Very cool. I wonder if the police are aware of the other fake coins she sold as authentic.

  • hahaha, she got owned. Great!

In the words of Maddox, "QED, bi*ch."
  • I suspect if the people that bought the fakes contacted the IFCC,the FBI and the Secret service would get involved pretty quick.

Just adding a little post-game commentary to this situation. When the seller's auction was being discussed on ebay's coin forum, he/she popped in to comment twice (posts 9 and 15 in the thread). Hilarious reading.

Another RCC poster believes Chickencoin2 is a dup account of the seller. Check out Chickencoin2's feedback - I don't remember ever seeing a seller accuse a buyer of fraud because of what the buyer did with the coin!

Few realize just how lucky this hobby is to have the Hobby Protection Act.

I used to deal in antique toys until the repros (that I put blurbs in my ads protesting) completely DESTROYED the market.

Few also realize that even with "COPY" on the damned fakes, it still hurts the ...value... of genuine coins. If only by the few who will settle for a lousy fake to "look at" instead of an empty hole.

The value of a collection of ANYTHING is enhanced by what you can NOT find easily.

  • Wow, I don't even want to buy off eBay anymore unless I see a seller ID that I've dealt with before, recognize from this board, or an ANA nr. that shows the seller has been around for awhile. I'm in a crazy pickel situationa with a seller right now that for some reason doesn't want me to buy from him because I've bought the same item from someone else previously. Figure that out. Thanks,

    Jerry

Poor thing. It was all a conspiracy and she's been wrongly accused.

It was quite funny to read coinmover's replies in that thread. It's so blasted obvious, ain't it?

Either buy from someone you know, or buy certified. There's not really any other way to deal with coins on eBay.
  • I also notice that she closed her Ebay account. I hope it means she is gone and not just changing handles. I congradulate who ever filed the complaint. I wish there was more of this happening. If a few seller went to jail the word would travel quickly.

BUSTED! From the article, claiming fair use:

BROOKFIELD - A township woman faces charges that she sold fake coins as authentic antiques on the Internet auction site eBay.

  • That article confused me at first because the dates on the page are all jacked up. They read Tuesday, July 30, 2002 on my browser. But I am guessing that is just a glitch as the link shows up on the site's main news page for Saturday's (Saturday, July 24, 2004) stories:

I noticed the same thing. It's a very recent story, I'm quite sure; the 7/30/2002 date is a bug or an error of some sort.
  • (Never mind...I see K6AZ posted about it in a different thread...)
