(edited to add grade and a little history)

First off, this coin is from the collection of Goose3's son, John Jr.. I originally purchased it dirt cheap in Aug. 2000 from Heritage's online inventory, just before really nice 65RD common dates started to dry up. You could cherrypick a few from Heritage every month back then, most of them marked "JH Exceptional". It made its way to the Goose Jr. Collection shortly after that and John Sr. was nice enough to loan it to me this week.

The average of your 19 grades so far (I gave Lakes a 65.5) is 65.75, and that might be about right. When John had it Photosealed by Rick Snow he said basically what Lakes said -- on a good day this could upgrade. Either way, it's more appealing and consistent looking than many of the 66RDs. A few examples:

PCGS MS66RD
PCGS MS66RD
PCGS MS67RD

PCGS pops is 171 in 65RD, 28 in 66RD, and 4 in 67RD. Since Aug. 2000 17 65RDs have been made, only 2 66RDs, and no 67RDs.

(end of edit)

It's not mine, but I had the chance to see it today. There's a couple light scratches on the obverse plastic.

If those scratches are on the holder, I'd call this one 66 RD. What an absolute beauty.

That pic looks faimilar. Isnt that the one that was bought off ebay only to make it in a high grade holder that sold for like 5K??? I cant remember the grade... for 5K, I'd think it was 67RD.

Barring the above statment, it looks like a really pq 66RD to me.

  • with me being mainly a lurker around here, let me say that for shylock to post that picture, it must be something else. I'll have to say it looks like a 67 all day long.

I've looked at coingallery.org long enough to see what a 67 red indian head cent looks like, and you're looking at it right up thereimage

  • Some marks in the left field.......I'll say 66red

A few too many hits for a MS-66, so I'll go with MS-65 RED. Nice coin.

Nice looking coin Paul. But I am going to go against the grain and say 64 red due to the hits in the obverse field.

I certainly wouldnt kick her out of bed though.

  • I'm strictly a novice, but I've never seen one better. MS-67 RD

  • Personally, it does look 66 rd, but I would give about a 90% chance of ending up in a bodybag at PCGS.
  • Assuming it is already in a holder, (maybe PCGS MS65 RD is my guess) don't crack and resubmit it. Red indians are rarely getting into holders these days.

TJKillian probably thought along the same lines as the PCGS graders, "a few too many hits for a MS-66." They allow flyspecs on 66RDs (and even some 67's), but are finicky about contact and this coin does have a couple tics on the left obverse. When I bought it I agreed, but now think it belongs with the 66's. Maybe that's more a statement about the coins for sale in 65RD holders these days than about its true grade.

If you're interested, you might want to send it in re in holder upgrade. I did the exact same thing with a 38 D Buff in a green label holder which was a technical 6 (due to a tick mark in the bison's midsection). However, the coin had "the look," and it upgraded.

Sometimes eye appeal will win out over technical grading. Then again, a lot depends on the series, and I don't know how they're grading IHCs these days. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the size of the coin, the tougher they are on contact marks.

Jeff - Well said about small coins getting less slack for contact marks. On a Morgan minor contact like this would be praised. I think that's why small cent collectors tend to see potential problems on these coins better than those who don't specialize in them, even on images. They're use to looking at small details.
