  • Just tried to vote and all I get is the current status--voted in round six--does that mean I can't play this round?
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
  • How can ANYONE not like the flowing hair design?? What I'd give to own one--even if I can't vote against the less than attractive Trade dollar design.

LOL this is a fun set of polls! Even though I still say the Peace $ got a raw deal image

It's getting tougher to make a choice, now.

Funny- so far, in every round I voted in (think I missed one or two), the coin I voted out was the one that went.

I wish there was a better picture of the trade dollar.... why don't you substitute the one in my sig line? image

I voted for Draped Bust.... Hey! What happened to the Gobrecht?????
  • jharjhar Posts: 1,126
I had allready gotten into the polls when I realized I had left Gobrecht dollars out. I was hoping no one would notice. But aren't Gobrecht dollars considered "Specimen" coins and not regular issue??

Wouldn't make any difference, I still voted for the Trade Dollar!

  • I know it is sour grapes, but if this forum thinks likes the Morgan obverse design least (compared to flowing hair, draped bust, seated and trade), then voting is sort of meaningless.

The 1836 and 1839 'Original' Gobrechts are considered regular issue coinage.

I also still say the peace dollar should still be in

One other thing I don't understand is how someone could think the trade dollar is ugly. Oh well. My opinion is clearly not the popular one (like high school all over again)
  • It looks like some people are just voting from the bottom of the list up !!

Bring back Peace, Bring back Morgan, get rid of Seated and get rid of Trade !!!

Well I think my icon shows my preference, but if the Draped Bust dollar wins, can it be with the small eagle on the reverse please? image

looks like the trade will be the next to go. to me a trade dollar is just bullion anyway.

    The Trade Dollar MUST DIE!

Now that I FINALLY ran off the Morgan I guess that it is time for the Trade to go. Not a real coin anyway...just bullion for the Orient.

Gee, how can you keep outta this one!!! Firstly, thank you all for that very generous welcome...Hopefully some coin pics from things I find will be a suitable thank you.

    On to the races...

Firstly, the US Mint. The new cointage we have been seeing is a very nice touch but you have to get in line early to get what you want...like buy on the release date. They have a site so if you want mint issues you can bookmark their site and keep up with it. Their stuff is pricey but it's not going to be cheaper unless you have a bank buddy. It would be hard to argue that they dont have nice things.

Outstanding contest on the dollars with the exception of the Goebrecht! flowing hair and draped designs are exceptional...post colonial design of an independent nation, the foundation of all that is to follow in our coinage (I'm thinking morgan here). Very interesting and important coin from a historical perspective. I know they are not the same but only one of these two can survive this forum so go ahead and pick it now. Lose the flowing hair, the draped is so much more sophisticated and should see the final round...very nice coin particularly with those D's.

Or, we could go ahead and lose the seated now. Certainly one of our most wonderful dollars...much sought after, delicious design, nice strikes but the appeal of this coin to me is the shield device. The device is very distinctive and it is one of the nicest shields that you will find on any U S coin, particularly with that ladies hand draped across the corner. Very nice indeed but...

That would leave us with the trade dollar...very nice discussion made in the forum about being mostly a bullion coin and not really intended for general circulation in the US. The coin is for commerce...an interesting decision by the mint at the time...well coordinated with the direction our agricultural country was taking as an emerging international player. Very complicated detail, much like the standing liberty quarter that appeared later. It is difficult to try and pick this coin as anything but the finalist with the draped bust. After that i suspect there will be some very interesting arguements in here.

    Lose the flowing hair...sadly.

P.S. "dont worry if your hair is turning grey...begin worrying when it starts to turn loose!"
  • Its getting tough. I dont see how people could vote for flowing hair... I voted draped bust.
