What will get gunk off red copper and leave behind the toning?

    What kind of gunk?
  • Hi,

If the coin is very valuable you may want to consider sending it to the NGC for their conservation. It's their version of properly cleaning a coin but, leaving all the luster and leaving no trace of the fact that the coin was cleaned.

I would venture to guess, it's a similar process as when they clean barnacles & gunk off of gold shipwrecked coins but, in the end... the gold coin looks like it never spent a day in the salts of the ocean.

BTW: what type coin is it and could you toss us a photo???

Not very valuable--a few bucks each...

Gunk like this (some have more than this)

I'm not seeing gunk. All I see is some variation in toning and maybe some water marks.

Think they're water marks? Any way to get rid of those?

  • Hey, send it in to NCS. I always like to see the before and after pictures of their copper work.

I would, but it's nowhere near worth $15 to start with... and if it were clean, it wouldn't be, either image

  • Even if they're only "water marks" I'm afraid you're stuck. I know of no method that will remove them without affecting the luster/cartwheel, i.e. it will be detected and BB'd. If you or anyone else ever figures out a way to do this on copper, LET ME KNOW!!! A fortune can be made!
