Do you collect "Exonumia" that accentuates coins in your collection???

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do you just collect coins and stop at that?? Or do you also collect Exonumia which is connected to certain issues??

Examples might be first day covers or original issue packaging such as mailers or tab holders. Some which fit into the realm of Numismatic items might be SC$'s and tokens or other medals. It may even be something which seems as disconnected as a stamp which was issued to coincide with a coin or a newspaper article which notes the issue.

I'm curious because that seems like a natural extension to the hobby, perhaps not for all items we might each have in our collections, but for certain items we treasure for whatever reasons. One I'm currently exploring is a timeline which will connect the C'stamped Cleveland commems I have from just prior to 1796 through the current day. It should be nice and varied, more than just a date run or set limited to coins.

So, do you entertain such pursuits, or do you just stick to coins??

Mostly just books, auction catalogs, fixed price lists and such. I don't really "collect" them as much as I just don't toss them out.

    Placid: Very cool medals.image

I got started collecting tokens and medals in a very direct way. I'd find items which
were almost exactly what I was already collecting but didn't quite fit. Then an item
would turn up that was extremely similar to it and it just went on and on. Eventually
similar items to one of these new ones would show up and I'd start a collection of
them. I collected telephone tokens for a couple years and had a fairly impressive col-
lection before I even knew what they were. They had just been odd looking tokens
which were obviously from the same source. Now I have the telephone token catalog
and several tokens which aren't even listed in it. Most of these are quite rare but there
is almost no competition for them. The most common TT probably exists in numbers un-
    der 1,000.

  • Hi,

I do keep the packaging, serial number cards and things like that.

As for Exonumia adding value... yes.

Think about it... which is worth more, you have two 1955 US Proof sets both in original clear plastic but, the second one comes with the original envelope from the US mint, a purchase receipt from the US mint, and a newspaper clipping from '55 announcing it's release... which will sell for more at auction?

    hey Spanky

you're on to something!!! many commems can be juiced up with items from celebrations held at the time of release, posters, flyers, brochures, etc.

I have a collection of medals and tokens issued by numismatic publishers. There are probably about 225 different items in it right now. I still need quite a few of the Coin World pieces from the pre-1980 period. My Krause collection is virtually complete, less the gold issues, and my Whitman collection is complete. There are a few other publishers represented as well. I've been working on this collection for about 20 years.

I collect these too, but you're way ahead of me. I also enjoy promotional tokens issued
    by mints and token manufacturers.

I've been working on elongated coins from 1893 Columbian Expo. Kind of a pseudo type set if you will. That also got me into the tickets from the fair. Not just the common admission tickets, but the ride and meal tickets.

Is numismatic literature (books, magazines, monographs, catalogs) exonumia?

Exonumia sounds like what happens when you get banished from this Forum.

Do Feuchtwanger Cents count as Exonumia? If so, yes, if not, no.

I do...I have all the silver spoons commemorating the Columbian Expo, a nutmeg pin from the Connecticut Tercentenary, a York commem tab holder, original Lex/Concord wooden box, Bridgeport box, and some other stuff. I think collecting items associated with the classic commems is an explosion waiting to happen.

Not technically exonumia, but I collect civil war tokens struck over FE and IHC's.
