Does this PCGS slab look tampered with??

Damaged Slab on FeeBay

Notice the label and what appears to be a crack in the holder on the right side of the slab.

That slab looks warped! Looks like someone left it in an oven (or a hot car).

Looks fine to me. Guy prolly has a fisheye problem with his lens with it magnified 20X I know it looks like a crack in the right top corner through the plastic on the obverse picture but look at the back of the slab in the reverse picture, it's fine. I think this is an overreaction.

  • I agree with Poorguy, looks like camera distortion

The slab does look distorted which is from a wide angle lens being too close to the subject.

That label seems to have some odd look to it.

edit: I just noticed the reverse. It would be hard to say but does look ok from the pics.

The coin appears to be MS64, but the slab looks like it's cracked.

It appears it has been left in an extremely hot area, and maybe if cracked the moisture couldve caused the damage to the label..but remember there was also counterfiet slabs that looked like this one...

Looks like a bad pic where the image is distorted and not the slab itself.

The certification label does not look to be in the best condition. I don't have one PCGS slab with the certification label in that type condition.
  • That label has me wondering.
It's like it got wet and dried out later. The crack might have something to do with that too.
It may actually be a damaged slab though.
But it would be nice to see the reverse of the label to see if it's a fake or not.
I think I would really have to see the coin and slab in person to decide for sure.
Someone could have cracked out the coin, someone else got the label, and someone else had a slab they could put it all back together again.

Just looks like the result of normal postal handling.

The label looks like it was wet and dried. The slab looks cracked but intacted. The coin looks 64 to me....

I'm not aware of any counterfeit PCGS slabs of his style. th only counterfeits I know of were of the PCGS 1 variety. This is a PCGS 5 used from 1995 to late 1998.

I've bought from this seller many times. His images aren't the best. I've had no problems with any of the coins I have bought, and in most cases they looked better than the image.
  • Hi,

I wrote to him asking if the warpping effect was from the photography or if the slab was possibly cracked.

If it's the photograhy, he really should reshoot those pix.

This is not necessarily a good reason to ignore the auction. Some of the larger dealers use "Buy It Now". I have bought a few items via "Buy It Now" from a couple of the larger dealers that use eBay (if I thought it wasn't too much above the starting price). It all depends.

In the case of this auction, you really need a better picture.
