relayer was trying to be sarcastic but I don't think it came across very well.
This is a very cool story and I'm looking forward to hearing about the finds!

I am new to these forums. It appears that there have been people in the past who have said they found "old grandpa's hoard" and tried to take advantage of people here on the forum. It appears there are many that are leary of stories like this. Ignore those who make comments. You may or may not find anything of great value (materially). One of the benefits of inheriting something like this is the sentimental value that comes with it.
You are looking for dealers in Seattle. I don't know any, because I am in Chicago. I would sort through what you have first. If there is a lot of stuff worth selling, assuming that's what you want to do, dealers from across the country would be interested. I would grab a couple of books so you know what you have. I can send a Coin World Trends price guide if you want one. That gives a pretty good retail price. You won't get that kind of price from a dealer though. I would also get a Red Book and/or the ANA Grading book if you are not familiar with it.
Key dates to look for would include but not limited to: 1909S VDB Lincoln penny 1922 Plain Lincoln penny 1916-D Mercury Dime 1932-D and S Washington Quarter
There are many others especially in other series like the Barber quarters and halves. Do your research before approaching a dealer.
Also, turn on your private message under your profile.
Zulan: I would recommend that you locate a reliable forum member in your local area to visit with you and to assist you in making an initial assessment of the coins.
They would probably be more interested in arranging the meeting after you post some representative photos of the various coins on the forum for others to also see.
Best of luck in going through them -- and most important of all have fun doing it!!

The last gentleman to post here with a "hoard" was moogadeet. He smelled "fishy" to a bunch of members too, til Jade proved them all wrong. How could any of you forget? Why are any of you even voicing distrust of Zulan? Looking to scare him away too?
Good for you goose in helping this guy out!
Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.
Russ, I, and a few others live in the Seattle area. Russ has a lot of great knowledge, even past the kennedys. If he is willing, that is great. If I can be of help, I will try too (I am nowhere near as good as he is though).
I actually live on the eastside (in Bellevue/Redmond area)...not sure if you are Seattle itself or local area. I do know a dealer or three I wouldn't go to though
Did anyone already go into don't clean your coins and only handle them by the rims? Also, go slow as far as bringing them to a coin dealer goes; learn as much as you can about grading & such before you do, or unless you go to somebody truly honorable you might get the 'aha, fresh meat' treatment, as in telling you your coins are of lower grade than they are, offering you very lowball buy prices etc. You could very well make a year's project of educating yourself before you do any transactions at all. Then at least you'll be a little bit informed before you try to sell, if you choose to do so.
Zulan, The Redbook would only be a start for the date and mintmark rarities. There are many repunched date, repunched mint mark, rotated dies, wrong metal coins, double dies on obverse and reverse and other error coins that are worth 100's to 1,000's times the value of the common date coins.
An example woule be a 1944-d Lincoln cent worth $1-$10 in uncirculated condition for the common while the D/S Die#1 would be worth $100-$1000 in the same condition!

Good point, Tony. This is all the more important considering the coins have been put away for 30+ years, and there are many desirable varieties which weren't even known at that time. So they couldn't have been identified back then.
Tony, you're probably drooling at the idea of going through a collection like that, aren't you?

I goofed up and posted there rather than posting on the "US coins" section. I replicated the post in the US coins section. Do you know how to delete a post??

We know your kind Zulan, coming here posting about coins you found and having the nerve to ask questions.
Sure, some of us will offer to cherrypick your coins and try and rip you off, but we are wise to your game.
We'll have you run out of here in no time at all.
Take your coin questions and go somewhere else - nobody is going to fall for that stuff here.
We be to smart for that.
