I am scared... but excited

I don't even know how to approach this. I am opening... tonight... a box of unknowns coins so heavy it was all I could do to lift it. It was owned by a man who died 30 years ago, and who used to have his own coin (radio) show in southern oregon in the 50's (they called him mr. coin). God know what is in this box. There is a second smaller box as well. Good grief.... help! I don't even know how to begin. But I am gonna lift the box lid in a few minutes and take a gander inside. My wife is now the proud owner of this box, and I get to sort it. It probably has a lot of just stuff... but who knows?

It feels like Christmas!

Anyone have ANY idea how to sort coins?? I am feeling quite overwhelmed at the prospect.

Thanks,
Zulanimage

Welcome to the board! Time for a giveaway! image

Just sort them a coin at a time. Probably by denomination and type.
  • tell us if and when you get something good

  • Welcome to the forums, Zulan!!

I don't know your level of knowledge of coins, so if I'm off the mark, please forgive me.

Some folks like to sort them out by type (Morgan, Lincoln, Seated, etc.) (This is my favorite way to go through new (to me) coin lots.

Others like to do it by denomination (half, dime, nickel, etc.), then by age.

Goodness knows, above all, have fun going through it!!!
  • how did you obtain this box???

  • ok i'm hooked
  • Gold gets sent to me. Copper gets sent to me. Steel gets sent to me. Silver gets sent to me. Aluminum gets sent to me. Thats probably the best way to sort it. image

  • I stand corrected.. I am up to 2 large and one small box (and more coming). The small box is FULL of shiny pennies... most look to be in the 1940's on up. I just hauled the big box upstairs. I literally had to have help to do it.

If we don't hear from him again, he probably passed out. That could be good or bad. Either he found gold, or he had a bunch of damaged coins.
  • Ooooppsss... just found a complete set of US half dollars in a book. Dated 1916 through 1947D. This IS christmas!!!! No ebay auctions following because I have NO idea what I am doing here.

Anything besides Wheat pennies, wore out Mercs, Washingtons out the wazoo...etc etc?

Do not attempt to clean any of the coins! They are worth more dirty in most cases.

Zulan: Welcome to the forum! I am curious about a few things to help as background for your big find.
--How did your wife happen to locate and acquire this large hoard of coins? --Did she pick them up for a bargain price? --Does she know enough about coins to know what to offer for such a large hoard so as not to get taken advantage of?

  • The hoard was free... it was her grandfathers. He actually sold coins for a living. It has been hidden in the basement for over a decade. Her mom gave it to her to sort out and she forgot about it.
  • Well whats in it?

  • well... goose went to bed, so no more pics for the night. He advised me to look for "key dates" (I am assuming that means dates more valuable than the others). I guess I need to sit down with a "redbook" or some other coin book and pick out the gems out of the dross. As to those who think this is "fishy"... why in the heck would I be posting a fraud? I was (am) excited and I wanted to share in that excitment and perhaps receive some advice in the process. I admit I am kind of bothered by the cynics.

I guess I just need to yank out my old coin book and post only the "good" stuff when I pick it out. I have about 100+ pounds of coins/proof sets/mediallions here, and I am betting the really cool stuff is in a pretty small percentage. I did find a 1801 penny and a 1865 2 cent piece, which I think is kinda cool anyway. Well, I guess I get to dig. I am slow, but I will post from time to time.

If anyone has any advice about good coin shops in the Seattle area... let me know. Maybe they can offer some help.

    Thanks for everything tonight.
    Zulan
