what are the chances of an up grade?

mozeppamozeppa Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭
i just recieved a 1909-s in the mail.... it is pcgs ms-64 bright red (pix not mine and are dark)

i placed it under my microscope at 15 power ....zero ticks or bag marks on the reverse....3 or 4 tiny ticks on the obverse.

well struck.

my 1909 plain in ms-66 doesn't look this good!

its in a dark green holder...the one with little "coin placement" grips in the area of the coins edge.

where coins of that "pcgs period" graded more tough? what gives?

any ideas?

should i crack it and send it in raw ?
or send it in as it is (...in its old holder) and will that predjudice the graders attitude towards an up grade? imageimage

  • I'd try ANACS, but just my opinion. I don't really like to get my coins graded by PCGS.

I'd leave it just like it is.

The graders don't see it in the holder. Upgrade submissions are cracked out and graded raw.

I'd send it in it's holder for upgrade service. Wrap the holder in a $20 bill which covers the old insert so they're not prejudiced. image

Seriously, though the images are dark it looks pretty good to me.
  • You have to stick with PCGS for Lincolns as they're the only ones who guarantee copper. I would send it in in the holder. It could come back 65RB otherwise. Plan to send it in up to three times on a Regular submission, or economy if you have other similar coins to send in. If it doesn't upgrade after the third time, then give up on it and treat it as a PQ 64.

    NGC guarantees copper.

Centmaster, NGC guarantees copper too, as long as it is in their newer holders. See link below....

Do you plan on selling it if it upgrades? If so, all you have to lose is $30 + postage. If not, I wouldn't bother. Suppose you decide to sell it 5 years form now and gradeflation makes you think you have a shot at a 67. You'll have to do it again then.

It has been my (limited) experience that PCGS will upgrade a coin sent in one of their holders IF it has outstanding eye appeal. The focus seems to be more one eye appeal / luster, and less so re strike & contact marks.

Barry raised an excellent point. Still, if you want to go ahead, before you do, if possible, line up your coin with 6 or 8 other 09S of the same grade in PCGS holders. If yours clearly looks better than the rest, by all means, send it in.

I don't know Lincoln Cents. But if there's no particular striking problems re the 09 S VDB, you can line up other early Lincolns in the same grade with problem-free dates for comparison.

Hard to tell by photo's, but the quality of the coin looks exceptional. I think its easily 65 quality, but you may lose the red designation if your photo's are showing the color correctly. Although you state it is a soild full red, and if so then no worries thier either.

If I were planning on keeping, I would leave it in the holder its in currenlty. But if your selling: you may consider that:

PCGS red lincolns bring the most money in most cases, so if your doing this to maximize return, then forget the other services and use PCGS for a regrade. Decent price jump from 64 to 65 may be worth a shot to upgrade vs leaving it in the 64 holder and getting PQ money for it??

But, keep inmind, if it doesnt succed, then your in a new blue holder and you may realize less than had you left it in the holder it was originally in?

  • Thanks, guys! I didn't know about NGC's new policy. Their ten year window of opportunity still leaves them a little bit of "wiggle room" as a lot of coins may turn after that time. PCGS' policy is still the best for copper, and thus Lincolns will always be worth more in their holders (as long as NGC doesn't change their policy again!)

I'd leave it alone and treat it as a PQ 64. I personaly love the older holders.
