Is NGC REALLY, REALLY lenient on grading Walker halves?...

I'm baffled. I just received a 46-D walker in NGC MS-63. If this is a 63 ( No,I don't have nor can I post pics, I wished I could), then my 46-P DDR has got to be at least a 64, with a finger on 65. I'm shocked at what is considered by NGC to be a 63.image

Yes, based on your single example, NGC must be REALLY, REALLY lenient grading Walkers.

I've seen walkers from both services with hits all over the leg graded as high as MS66, which baffles me.

Yep, the grades can be all over the place for BOTH services. I've had MS-63s with less marks than pieces I've seen in MS-65 holders, and the so-called MS-65 coins did not have a superior strike to justify the grading.

The common date Walkers are often bulk graded (dealer sends in a whole roll with instructions that a coin must meet a given grade or don't grade it), and it seems like they graders don't spend the time to get it consistently right.

As for NGC coins, I've had and seen some really great early walkers in NGC holders that were just as good as their PCGS counterparts. And early walkers, pricewise, are were the rubber really meets the road in that series.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The specimen in question, is flat on the legs, the skirtlines are somewhat clear to the naked eye, the thumb's open. To me, it appears as if it was cleaned (hand rubbed) at one time or another. This SHOULDN'T be in a 63 holder IMO.

Bear in mind there is a lot of leeway with an ms/63 coin.

The strike can be subpar, as well as the luster. There can be plenty of marks/hits on the coin, especially if they aren't in the primary focal areas.

That goes for almost any series, not just Walkers.

For inconsistency from submission to submission with both PCGS and NGC I'd say Walkers and SLQ's are often botched. I don't know why but it's pot luck. You can find 65's graded 63 and 63's graded 65. Crazy.

why would you quibble about "ms-63" on something as common as a wlh? "ms-63" just means your typical, average, run-of-the-mill unc, which for a coin the size of a half, can vary widely in appearance. if it looks like any of a hundred billion other wlh's out of any bank bag of coins, then it almost certainly IS ms-63.

Is NGC lenient in grading Saints ? I see PCGS graded ones selling for a premium.

There must be something wrong with my eyes, coz I don't see a difference in Saints graded
    by NGC and PCGS ......

Anyone else with bad eyes like me.
