Boycott for Modern Commens

I ran across this Modern Commens Is this still being widely pushed? The only date I saw was Oct 2, 1995. It jogged my memory of someone here replying to a post a while back by asking if the original poster was boycotting Moderns. Now I understand why he asked that.

Never heard of it before. There is a simple solution, though, to this problem: stop buying them if you don't like them.
  • I think that is what a boycott means image

And, everybody who bought the JR $5 Gold from the mint is thanking the boycott movement all the way to the bank.

  • Thanks, the whole thing just seemed kind of goofy, for a lack of a better word.

  • Please by all means, boycott modern commemoratives. They just so happen to be my favorite series, and it leaves lower mintages for us to collect. Really though, I've heard way too much whining over the years. If you think the're ugly, boring or just dont like them, all you have to do is DON'T BUY THEM! Nobody is making you buy them!
BTW, where else but coin collecting will you find whiners trying to take away what other collectors appreciate and enjoy.

Exactly! That's why I said the whole thing just seemed kind of goofy. I agree wholeheartedly. If you like them, have fun. If you don't like them stay away.

Boycott by all means, lower the price, lower future mintages, make them, now and in the future, even more "collectible."
ps. the designs are way cool, but some think the commems "just get in the way" of their collection endeavors. I don't think this is the case as a "spreading" of tastes helps all series' markets.

I loved the so-called boycott. I know a lot of people would not buy any modern commems in 1995 and 1996. I didn't buy the uncirculated Atlanta Olympic issues until the last day of sale on Dec 31, 1996. I also bought all of the other modern commems from 1994 to 2003. It looked like those Atlanta Olympic coins were going to be a bust, but the registry sets changed all that and prices skyrocketted. I never was much impressed with some of the modern commems so I sold all of them except for the eagles and few MS70 dollars. The JR half eagle sold for $1900, the Civil
War half eagle for $700, the Atlanta half eagles for $400 to $500 apiece. What made the greatest profit were the Atlanta Olympic half dollars. I sold some of them for over 10 times their issue price. The granddady of them all was the Atlanta swimming half. I don't know why but I had an MS68 Swimming half that went for $130. I wished I had bought another set of the Atlanta coins. Anyway, after selling my complete set of uncirculated commems I made a nice profit of $6000, almost 100% profit. Some of the earlier modern commems before 1994 were losers, so virtually all the gains came from 1994 to 2003. And yes, I did claim the gains on my income tax.

I was not collecting in 1995 so I do not remember this. I find the issue to be quite funny. I think the circulating coins of today are pathetic. So I proclaim we boycott all current coins from the US Mint. That will sure show the mint who is in charge.

Unless I am mistaken, we collect coins..............not dictate to the mint what coins to produce.

If you don't think a coin is right for your collection, don't buy it.
