Hi. Is the coin slabbed? What is the grade you think it is or bought it for?
  • It's not in a slab. I'd say it would go MS62 or MS63 because of the strike.

Looks like a good pickup. Looks as if it might have a little haze on it like most of the Sequis. I don't think I have seen a Sequi that wasn't hazy. What was wrong in the manufacture of this coin?
  • The coin actually has pretty good luster. I just took a crappy picture. Here's another attempt:

Actually that strike is not bad for this issue. These coins were struck on very shallow dies and the detail never comes up. Many of these coins have "marks" on Washington's face, which on the planchet before the coin was struck. That's how shallow these dies were.

I think that the fact that this coin has been dipped will hold the grade back. The strike is good enough to get the coin an MS-63 or even 64, at least going by by the second picture.

Here's the piece from my collection, which is a PCGS MS-64. It's about as good as any I have ever seen in the MS-64 grade. I paid a premium for this piece at the time that I bought it.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

this is another very hard issue to find with a decent strike and the accompanying strong luster. from my searching, the mediocre slabbed coins rule the day. i've only seen about half-a-dozen examples i really think were nice in grades lower than MS64, so i guess if i ever want to own a Sesqui i'll have to pony up the long dollar. for a simple design, it's one i really like.

I agree, the vast majority are softly struck.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
