Depends on how bad the scratch is, and how valuable the coin...

Age does. Plenty of Bust coins with scratches are holdered.
  • I have a shield nickel that is 64 quality but has a staple scratch, PCGS gave it a 58 but did holder it.

I think if it is a very unnoticable light scratch that is well concealed it may make it through and be downgraded. Otherwise instant body bag.

I'm saying, they are more likely to holder a scarcer coin, worth quite a bit of money, over a coin worth only a couple hunndred dollars with the same scratch.

If it's noticable on a coin of that value......no.

I submitted 94P with a thin staple scratch (about .25 inch), coin came back in a body bag.

Shouldn't a grading company have a consistent policy regarding damaged coins, instead of this nebulous "maybe we will and maybe we won't- send it in and find out" type of policy??

I had a nice gold $1 that had a scratch on it. I bought it raw and I send in all raw gold more for authenticity than anything. The scratch wasn't major, but it was certainly there. I was hoping for MS61 if it graded at all. PCGS sent it back with MS62 and I sold it off doubling my money. I wonder what it would have come back with if it didn't have the scratch.

    I sent in a MS 1915 S Pan-Pacific gold $1 with a staple scratch on the cheek and the P BB'd it.

Without question. Check the Heritage archive for 1872-S quarters - there was one in there not too long ago.

I think the severity of the scratch is what matters (or so I've been led to believe). Length and depth and location.

I have a 95 5c with a scratch which is actually pretty long (and very straight), although it's very thin and not very deep ... in the obverse field ... it's a p58 (accurate if you miss the scratch). I didn't make it, and probably would have never sent it in, but I guess they do grade them.

  • If you "had" 3 apples, then you must now either have more than or less than 3 apples.

Can the grading cos. tell if a scratch is caused by a staple and nothing but a staple?

Only if all staple scratches are identical in size (proportional to the size of the coin) and location. Of course they're not, so no "policy" can offer perfect guidance.
