1898 Morgan...PROS AND CONS PLEASE

Just purchased this 1898 Morgan, would appreciate some feedback on this being this is the second Morgan Ive posted here(1899 being other one) I thought the coin was pretty original and clean with nice eye appeal. I paid $22 for this particuilar coin and would like some opinions be it Negative or Positive(Constructive Criticism..no problem) I have the PCGS Coin Grading and Counterfeit....book and it helps alot, but enjoy the insight that I receive here on the forums the most where for the most part most opinions are positive and helpful to Newbies like myself.image

Thanks; ERIC

I really don't know enough about Morgans and grading them. But the cheek on Ms. Liberty looks pretty clean in that scan. image

Looks somewhat lackluster but that could just be the picture.
The coin either has a poor strike (look at the lower wreath area on the reverse) or is a slider. Because of the color change above the ear I am going to guess it is a slider.

So long as the lustre is there, it looks like you've got a 64 or 65... nice score! For the price, I can't say anything negative about it image

  • $22 sounds like a good deal to me.....no major dings or scrapes. The reverse strike looks a little weak and that might be a little rub on the obverse above the ear.

Looks good, appears to have some nice skin on it. I'd give it a 64, possibly 63.

Unless I am missing something in the scan, you stole that coin. Looks to be at least MS65 to me.
  • If the luster is there, that's a nice one.

It's very difficult to detect the coin's luster from the scanned image provided.

If the coin is uncirculated (could be high end AU), then it could grade as high as an MS-64 based on the weak strike and relatively few and light contact marks, if the luster is strong. If uncirculated, with dull and subdued luster it may grade as low as MS-63.

The strike is pretty decent and very few marks, I'd say it was a 64 or higher. The weakness @ E & D in one dollar & in the leaves look like it was struck through some grease.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Beut...I have to disagree with strong strike though for the reverse. The obverse is a beut, but the eagles breast still lacks all strong feathers. Still a great deal and an easy 63+++
  • Hi,

The obverse strike is really nice... the detail in the hair above the ear is sweet... very few marks over all. The reverse appears soft on the breast feathers though, weak strike there perhaps.

A scan never seems to show the luster of a coin.... if it has average luster, it's should grade at an MS63 or MS64 ... if it is really blazzing or has a mirror like quaility... it could be an MS65 but, I can't say that without seeing the coin in a true photo.

Over all... for $22.00 ... you did well.

If you open the pictures in photshop and select auto levels this is what you get.

  • Wow! thats really interesting! image

Based on the two completely different scans, do you see a drastic or not so subtle change in the coin, either positive or negative.

Thank you.....PLACID..really cool what you did with the pictures....appreciate it.

For me it somewhat confirms the luster is dead in the fields as the hair now gives the bright silver look.
Might still look better in person.

I always use photoshop on a coin I am considering buying on eBay as some sellers tweak their photo's to make a coin look better and others just have the camera adjustments off.

On a good day, it looks like a high-end 64 to me with maybe a shot at 65.

On a bad day, it could be a slider.

If it's a slider, you still came out OK.

If it's a PQ MS64 or an MS65, you just made yourself a score!

Personally, I'm with K6AZ. I think you stole that coin. image
