Battle of the eBay 1895-O PCGS AU-58 Morgans

Two different auctions for the "same" coin with BIG differences in price.

Auction 1

Auction 2

Edited to correct a statement about auction ending dates and times. Seems I had a problem with simple math.

They end with 3 days and 3 hours apart.

Many folks know Ira very well. His coins are always with eye appealing.
I won't surprise his 95-O goes for the higher price.

  • The first one is being sold by a friend of mine whom I trust, but this particular one is NOT AU58. I realize she has a weak strike, but she's more like AU53.

The second one I don't know, but this is a solid AU58, thus is priced higher than the other one graded the same.

I guess Greysheet is a little off on the value for this coin?

Larry Whitlow had 2 examples for sale,

    1-PCGS AU55 for less than $1500
    1-PCGS AU 58 for less than $4000

Last time I looked on his site, both were gone.
The AU55 appeared to be a nicer coin from the pics.

This is one of those dates, like the 1892-s and 1889-cc, that have a spread of perhaps as much $3500 from AU50 to 58 for the right coin.
A completely original 1889-cc in 58 would probably fetch $7k perhaps $8k... The 1892-s is always found dipped or enhanced in some way, and an original 58 would fetch at least $5K (PROBABLY ALOT MORE) in this market and AU ask is $1430. The 1895-o is the easiest of the three to get in this grade and perhaps the one that may be the most overvalued in AU58.

The second auction is a Relist at a lower price I believe!

I like the second one better, looks more like what a 58 should look like. Is it worth the extra 2k, I dont know this date that well enough to say whether it is or isnt, but I like it.

Ira's prices are sometimes strong, but the quality of the coins he sells are top knotch.

Ill use Ira's term "quality never is cheap" many times the quality is worth the extra premium??

Yes, the second one looks better, like a classic AU58 although a little beat up. The first looks like a very weak strike, although it's hard to tell from the photos. Those weak strike coins can grade with a wide range.

I own another 58 that if not for a slight rub on the obverse...it would be a 64pl or dmpl..
Probably the nicest coin I have ever owned.
I will bet it sells for more than 10k in the Pre-ANA sale..

ms60 coins if u can find them are 11-12k
    ms61 12-15k
so you can see what the right au58 will sell for.

I will sell the Ebay coin in question to any board member for $4499.00 delivered.

If I had $4499 available, I would snap it up in a heart beat. It will be a few more years before I can plunk down that amount for one Morgan.

One difference between us and MOST dealers... is
we try and sell coins at the lowest possible price.
We don't make our living selling coins.
Other dealers are getting crazy money for coins because they can.
I want customers to remember us when the market turns if it does..
