What do you see as the key difference between the Darkside and Registry Set worlds?

I have one foot in both worlds. I zonk on the Darkside but I have several Registry Sets that I really, really enjoy, too.

I know the feeling I have some great Light side Sets but there is so much more bang for the buck on the dark side. Plus the Dark side is so much more friendly.

Trial lawyering (i.e. fussin', fitin' 'n fueden') was a major part of my professional life for over 35 years. The camraderie of the darkside is far more pleasurable in my dotage than the competitive Registry Set action would be.

I too have many registry sets, but find the folks around here much more friendly ... at least the Southerners.

I have a registry set, only one, don't ask me why though. My liteside collection is very specialized, and although I enjoy it, the coins are pricey. Thus limiting my purchases to a couple a year.
For about a year or so I have been treading in the dark. The designs, and seemingly unlimited variety of coins brought the fun back to collecting. And fun and excitement was something that was missing. And as Cosmic put it, you can't beat the bang for the buck! I also enjoy these forums more than the liteside. The feeling is a lot lighter in the Dark!
So my answer would be "fun."

Your name says it all... if your are Just having fun that is what is important. I do not have a registry set, but I do collect US coins as well as world coins. Currently, I enjoy world coins more because it something that I just find to be more interesting and without the boundaries and limitations I see with US coins.

Just for the fun of it, attend a decent sized coin show and plan to spend more time than usual and look carefully at the tables of some of the world coin coin dealers. Use your grading talent and examine some older world coins from the countries of your choice and I think you may be surprised at what you are able to find. Have fun in the search!

The key difference is, as others have noted, we're "just having fun" while they're out for blood and pop-tops. We collect beautiful -- and rarer -- coins while they collect sl@bs with rare labels and which also just happen to have a beautiful coin in them.

Darkside registry is the bomb. There is no competition and no dire need to complete any set.

Don't do registry, and no competition here, just an occasional envy attack.....

On the surface the worlds can't be more different, but just below the surface they
are as similar as any two collectors. If you scratch a darksider or a registrant you'll
find a collector underneath and both will bleed "coins". Both will be just having fun
collecting and will be seeking knowledge and completeness. That these two areas
attract different people who communicate differently on these message boards is
irrelevant. Eventually there'll probably be a darkside registry forum too.

Glad to meet you, Bill. And yes, the people here are indeed much friendlier than on the LightSide. The spirit of cooperation and fellowship that I see on the DarkSide is largely missing on the Lightside.

And I think you're right, Satootoko: the Registry Set business is great marketing but is the reason why the good vibes that should be coming from a shared passion for coins are lacking on the LightSide.

And I agree: there is sooooo much more bang for the buck on the DarkSide. I collect the US Philippine coins and more recently Thai coins. I get coins that would cost $120,000 to $200,000 on the LightSide, but because they're Darkside coins, they cost "only" a few thousand.

Also, you can still get great finds on the Darkside: $3,000 coins for $30; $1,000 coins for $50. And so forth. It makes browsing through a dealer's Darkside "junk" alot more innaresting than flipping through Lightside slabs looking for rare paper on common coins.

And conversely, in the Darkside world no one would guess that ol' Billy Bob or Jimmy had a top-10 collection.

I too have many registry sets, but find the folks around here much more friendly ... at least the Southerners.

Now Compa, even them thar Nauth-run boys are decent types on the Darkside.

I have a very tiny reg set on the liteside. I enjoy it--being involved in anything gives you a little more perspective on what it's all about, and why others may enjoy it. Like most things in life--approach it in a way you find meaningful, and it won't be a waste of your time.

My goal with my reg set was to put together as nice a set as I could without paying attention to numbers. What I have enjoyed most about the experience is photographing and describing the coins for my little internet coin album.

My guess is that there actually is quite an overlap between the Darkside and Registry Set worlds. You can see it in this thread by the number of Darksiders that have some participation in the Registry.

One thing that was a revelation to me when I became interested in Darkside coins is that it really opened up numismatics for me. The Registry is just another option for participation. I like that I have tasted a bit of everything. Maybe I'll go buy a Goetz medal next.

There have been a number of times where I could have upgraded the coins numerically, but I've passed.

It's funny, this little collection just feels complete to me. And anytime I contemplate upgrading one of the coins, I start feeling almost guilty--like I'm playing with something that already has the right balance. But, it's hard not to meddle with a 12 coin set. Because, finding new coins is... so... much.... fun! As a wise painter once said though: "Know when to stop painting."

Clankeye: That's a nice collection. I collect that short series, too, and they're hard to find nice or toned nicely. Looks like you have 'em both.

MacCrimmon: I agree that people seem friendlier on the Darkside than on the REgistry Set message board. Even though I do have more slabs than not slabs, I feel more comfortable and at home here. But I haven't noticed any difference between northerners or southerners; easterners or westerners -- at least on the boards.
