How important are Morgans to the coin market?

Anyone have any thoughts on just what percentage of the numismatic market, in terms of dollar volume, Morgans make up?
All glory is fleeting.

Not sure dollarwise, but they one of the most popular series ever and many dealers would be hard pressed to stay in business without them.

I think Morgans make up half of the entire coin market (in dollar volume).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    I would agree...about half.
  • There the coin I see the most at shows, besides modern crap.

Morgans are the staple, IMHO. Even for those collectors who no longer collect Morgans due to having branched out into other areas, you would be hard pressed to find a serious collector that has never owned a Morgan dollar.

Morgan Dollars are huge in the U.S. coin market.

As collectors' items they are extremely popular, and set the surviving population is very large, there are plenty of the common dates to go around, even in Choice Mint State. There are dealers who specialize in Morgan Dollars, and most every dealer has at least a few in stock.

As a way to hold silver bullion, they are among the most popular coins going. Many larger dealers have boxes of circulated Morgan Dollars that they will sell at inexpensive prices.

Among all the U.S. coin series the Morgan Dollar is the most popular, and from a sales volume perspective they are #1 there as well.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • They are important because of the large quantity and quality available.
