Thoughts on recently purchased 1899 Morgan....

Well I've been searching for a moderatey priced 1899 morgan and I finally broke down and bought one.image I know it's not the best(few minor rim nicks? and blemishes)image but for now it will fill a little hole in my set, was just wondering what some of your opinions on this coin would be.(paid about 65 dollars for it) I'm pretty new here and really enjoy this forum. For one thing it has really made me scrutinize my purchases and current morgans more(Thank you)

Thank You

Eric

I love it! I dont like morgans that are perfect...that one shows true character. I would say an easy AU, possibly a 62 at ngc! Nice buy! Cant go wrong for the price either!

Looks like a real sharp AU...Good find. Yo AYEEEE...Welcome!image
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • In my opinion it looks AU 55 so I would say you did alright at 65.00
  • Hi,

IMHO you did not over pay for that coin... although it's not in my hand and the photos are a little small... the coin looks very sweet.

    Good luck with your collection!

Too bad I didn't see you last week... you could have took a shot a a few of my Morgan's on Ebay, they all came from two BU Un-Circulated, the absolute best one's went into my collection... the others went up on Ebay.

It certainly has AU details. If it has problems, you may have paid just a bit much for it. What concerns me though is that unless I am seeing things such as an artifact of the scan, the mint mark area looks suspicious to me. Carefully look at where the mintmark would be with a loop. Back in the late 70s when there was a huge price difference, there were a lot of 99-Os that had the O removed.

I too have concerns, but not about the mintmark.
If the 'luster' of the coin is represented in the image, there seems to be a noticable difference between the fields & outer edges (where the stars & type begins). Sending coins with a lot less contrast have been body-bagged for cleaning.
If you intend to keep this coin in an album, then I think if you feel good about the purchase then you did goodimages

  • hope that color is from the scan and it hasn't been freshly dipped
  • Congratulations from a fellow Morgan lover. Finding a nice 1899 is no easy task. As K6AZ said, beware of counterfeits on the tough dates like this one. She looks AU55 to me, and possibly dipped, but I can't tell for sure.
