So just what IS going on right now? What's Hot and what's NOT!

Is it just me or have things changed within the Numismatic community recently? Just a month ago things were blowing and

going-now things seem to have slowed to a trickle. Any insight or opinions? What's hot and what's not? Has the proverbial

bubble already burst? Over the past few weeks I have offered some really top notch material. Sales, at best, were sparse.

Now I am offering a little of everything and, sure enough, things are still equally as slow. Coins that people literally

fought over recently, now have not even drawn a bid other than coins with AWESOME COLORS (That seems to be the key

words that bring the search engines to life) How do you feel about all of this? Thanks, in advance, for taking time to give your

honest, expert opinions.image

Even in a busy market the summertime is still the slowest time as everyone goes on vacation.

Raw moderns have been taking a breather for several months now except for BU clad rolls
which are smokin'. High grade stuff is still doing OK with a big supply squeeze becoming
apparent. Commems and proofs are still a little slow. Better dates and varieties are still
    pretty hot.

Mint and proof sets are probably cool because large numbers of dealers and collectors have
dug up all the sets they own to check them for more valuable coins. This has released a flood
of sets which the market hasn't yet absorbed. Soon supply will be back to its decades long
slip, and demand will probaby continue to ratchet upward.

Thanks for the replies, one and all. The "Summertime" reason does seem credible but what concerns me is a rather long thread
that was posted recently in which many posted. There was much talk of the proverbial Bubble bursting! THAT concerns me as

this is my livelihood. Coachleonard. I second your statement to the "T". Over the past few weeks I've offered everything from PQ PCGS certified rare coins to presently a hodge-podge of even low budget things for beginners. To see how it is, simply

click on the sig line. Wellll, looks like two things will now transpire. 1) Get a bunch of coins graded and 2) Vacation!image
  • My experience in local flea markets and small shows in northern Texas and southern Okahoma in last sixty days:

    ****BUFFALO NICKELS****

Common date in low grades - unchanged but demand has weakened.
Common dates XF to AU - slightly lower.
Common dates in MS 60 thru 62 - lower.
Common dates MS63 and up - impossible to generalize as they are infrequently seen at small shows and flea markets except for some late 1930's dates and 1913 Type 1 which are readily available in MS63 to MS65. Prices all over the board for these. They seem to sell quite well.

Key and semi-key dates in G - F grades are slightly higher for PCGS/NGC/ANACS buffalos which are always in demand. "Raw" coins unchanged - almost all are not very desirable. Most ANACS coins are net graded and are by far the most common of the TPG coins.

Key and semi key dates VF to AU - demand is very high. Bold strikes or near bold strikes never seen. Occasionally the typical weak strike coin pops up. Strongest market area. PCGS coins very seldom seen. NGC/ANACS graded coins being bought for crossover to PCGS and buyers typically ask: "Will this cross to PCGS?" Not that many raw coins available - and when available are way overgraded and/or have problems. Even these do not last long.

Key and semi key dates MS - Very rarely available at small show venues. Haven't seen one for years.

Lately there have been a few raw 3-legged 1937-D coins available in F and lower. Grading standards have gotten lower for "raw" coins especially for the semi-key and key dates. Some buyers getting burned by unscrupulous sellers who are coming out of the woodwork especially at flea markets. More buyers for buffalo nickels especially at flea markets who are searching for better material which is difficult to come by at these places. Some have commented that eBay has dried up as a source for the better stuff. Some sound desperate.

Washington Quarter. Good thinf there's a Robert Trent Jones / Pete Dye championship Golf Course in the back yard... I can

always sell golf balls and some of my sets of Golf Clubs. Anybody wanna buy a 72 Implal Custom Coupe with only 60,000

    Hey Boom,

I have also noticed a slow down on the buy side. The higher-end slab items I have been buying on ebay are not hitting the PCGS or Coin Values prices. In fact I have been very surprised the last couple of weeks to wake up, click on my auctions, and find I have won coins that I bid 80% to 85% of retail on and toned material seems to be very soft to me. This was not the case just a couple of months ago. I even won a proof 2 cent piece on Teletrade the other day at below listed price.
Believe it or not, I don’t even have a guess of why this would be happening at this time.

    hey Boom

Jefferson Nickels are really the only thing that i routinely make note of, though i search and collect in other areas, also. what i've noticed is that over the past sevral years, listings at eBay----sorry, but that venue is a good bellweather----have increased steadily until the past month or so. there was a time about 4-5 years ago that the total listings from a search on PCGS Jefferson would have totaled about 75-150 listing at any given time. as recently as last November-January that had peaked at close to 700 routinely every week. a search this morning gave a total under 300 which meant that the listings for a Sunday night, which is typically the largest for new listings, stayed on the first page for the first time in recent memory.

all this while the market is hot and there have been new releases within the series. hopefully it translates into lower prices. the proofs have been readily available lately at levels which are moderate for even better than average coins. the Mint State examples have been climbing higher and higher with each sale. i've turned my efforts to holdering coins for my set instead of buying already holdered example.

Thanks again- lightning's done for now. Hey Keets, what's the highest graded P issue of this new nickel? I have 15

unopened shoygun rolls and am contemplating bulk submission, same as with Washington Quarters in OBW rolls

but I can't make myself put out that much money only to be stuck with them. Man this is insane...click the sig line,

see for yourself how pitiful bidding is. Not even one bid on a Gem PCGS 1932. This sux.

A good indicator if the link works - A BU 34-D for less than $100. Before I give my stuff away, I'm shutting it down or will sell something else! Razorface seems thrilled with it!

    Boom,

I dont know about other series, but I just now got blown slam out of the water on a 1921-s WLH PCGS-50 on the bay. The coin was nice and original, but right at a 50 grade wise. Probably 45 a few years ago. I placed a bid of 7700.00 which is what I thought would buy it, but it sold at near 9k.

    I dont call that softening!!

No slowdown in Lincolns... closed yesterday on ebay $870 for a 64rb 15-s, $1100 for a 64rb 24-s! Some crazy prices. 2 coins I want are on ebay now and I'm scared about how much I'm going to have to pay.

    Summertime
    DuBose Heyward, George Gershwin

    Summertime, time, time,
    Child, the living's easy.
    Fish are jumping out
    And the cotton, Lord,
    Cotton's high, Lord, so high.

    Your daddy's rich
And your ma is so good-looking, baby.
    She's looking good now,
Hush, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby,
No, no, no, no, don't you cry.
    Don't you cry!

    One of these mornings
You're gonna rise, rise up singing,
    You're gonna spread your wings,
Child, and take, take to the sky,
    Lord, the sky.

    But until that morning
Honey, n-n-nothing's going to harm you now,
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
    Don't you cry,
    Cry.

"Summertime " seems to be the general consensus both on and off these boards. All I know is "something" happened , real quick-like, just within the past couple weeks. It's more of a intuitive thing for me.....an uneasy feeling, not explainable!image
  • Colorful type coins don't seem to be letting up much. In the last auctions, especially Superior's, colorful type coins were still through the roof for many series.

Yes, I can see that but from what I have read here, PCGS has problems discerning colorful coins.

Not quite "Thrilled" yet! I've yet to receive it. If what the seller says to be the truth, and this coin looks much better in hand, by all means I will be thrilled. Moreover, he did state that there wasn't the type of toning on the specimen as is rendered in the picture. We'll see!imageimage

I guess the opinion here is that the market has not cooled very much, since that is not what I am seeing, this means I am using the wrong pricing guides. What guides are you using to see these strong prices? With the exception of a few extreme modern colored coins I am seeing, as well as buying, great toners at one and a half times white. In pre 1900 toners the prices have been even with white. All of these are in grades MS or PR 64 to 66. The white coins in high grades I have been buying have been 10% to 20% below the published retail pricing guides, and everything I buy now is NGC or PCGS?
Are the Grey sheets this much lower?

Yes! Many are! Judging by some of the replies in the threads on this forum they will continue to be hot for quite some time!
