Which one would you buy?

Two identical coins. You like them both equally. You only need one for your collection. One's in a PCGS 65 holder and priced at $500. The other's in an NGC 65 holder and priced at $450. Which would you buy and why?

NGC 65 and use the $50 to buy another coin.

It would depend. #1; I'd have to see the specimen #2: After seeing the coin, I'd have to make a decision as to which has more eye appeal #3: Always keeping in mind what the majority at this forum express..."Don't buy the plastic -w- the label, buy the coin!" & #4 After reviewing the prior 3, consider the $50 image

Opps...Forgot #5: The denomination and the pop. stats

    I would buy the NGC.

If they were priced the same, I would buy the PCGS.

As with any pair of coins, I would have to see them. The coin in the PCGS holder would have to justify itself for the $50 - the holder doesn't justify anything by itself.

I would buy the PCGS coin. Why? Because I like to play the Set Registry game and it would cost me far more than $50 in time, in crossover fees, in postage and in hassle to get the darn thing crossed.

I would post pictures of both here and ask for opinions image

If the coins are truly identical, I'd buy the NGC coin for my collection or business inventory. I can get fair prices for either brand when the coins are graded correctly. I only draw the line at "third world slabs." In those cases I treat the offers like raw coins. I decide what the coin would grade at NGC or PCGS, figure in the slabbing expenses and the chances that I will get the grade I think that coin will get and go from there.

Of course if I thought that the coins were a good buy from a business perspective I'd buy both. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I could careless about the plastic. Buy the NGC coin and use the $50 towards something else.

  • Uhm... depends on the series. Smaller silvers, especially white coins, look better in PCGS. But toned silver and bigger coins look better to me in NGC. But I do generally prefer PCGS' holders.

I would buy the PCGS coin because it would on the average bring 50.00 more if I sold it------------------BigE

If I truly like them both equally, I'd buy the NGC coin.

Depend on why I'm buying. Registry-wise PCGS would be better to save on the hassle of crossing over.

I agree with the rest of the folk - if the coins are truly identical - and this happens all the time - go for the NGC example and put the $50 toward something else image

I'd have to go with the NGC coin --- that is to say if the coins were identical, and were solid for the grade.

  • I would probably do this:

Look at some real-world average selling prices: ebay, teletrade, heritage, DLRC, etc.
If there was a $50 difference between what NGC and PCGS slabs were selling for, I would by the PCGS slab.

The idea is that I could probably recoup the money if I decided to sell.

I realize this strategy is full of logical holes, but that is what I would do. It mostly reflects my bias that I think PCGS slabs bring a bit more at sale, may sell faster, and the fact that I don't like the thick white insert in NGC slabs, especially on smaller sized coins.
