Opinions on 2 Half Dimes...

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,042 ✭✭✭✭✭
So here are two half dimes I've been thinking about. I'm new to this series and not quite confident yet. I know the photos are small and suck but they are all I have available right now...please do what you can with them. Thanks guys/gals.

Question: AT or NT? (please give some kind of explanation) (I really don't know what typical NT on these coins looks like)

Question: Does this look cleaned? What do you think for its possible grade? (I'm thinking in the AU range)

The 32 looks to be natural toning from the scan. Please understand that is an educated guess based on a scan. The scan of the other coin is less revealing. VF30 on the low side(net if cleaned) and EF40 on the high side.

I dunno, that first one is a small image but it appears to have some un-natural colors to me. Look real close and it has colors like in the cereal "Fruit Loops."image Look in the shield on the rev and just all over basically. Perhaps it's been cleaned and re-toned. The second one, if you're looking for an "original surface coin.... IMO this would not be the one. Blast white looks like a chicken that just got plucked for an old coin just don't look right. You can also see the dirt left behind in the devices. I may not be a good writer but I just try and be honest with my opinion and say what I see. Hope this helps.

Edit to add.... whether I'm correct on my opinion of these 2 coins or not..... I would personally not be interested in them for my above reasons.

Thanks for the input image I think I'll pass on these two. Does anyone have any pics of raw capped bust half dimes that are not AT or cleaned and in circulated grades?

Well, that 1832 coin may be ok. Hard to judge from the photo. Stman has some good points with it, but I've seen that color on bust half dimes, and it's ok.

Pic's are tough with these little coins.

That 1835 coin is typical of what you will usually find with these early bust coins. Most likely cleaned with baking soda at one time or another. A lot of coins with this "look" will still slab though.

Baley, nice coin, but I'm not sure if your coin was never molested at one point or another in it's history. Could be the pic again though.

I think that the 1832 was dipped at one time and has now toned back to the colors you see here. I don't think that it's a Mint State coin from what I can see. The scan is kind of small.

The 1835 has been cleaned with baking soda, and as BigD said it's typical of what you often see these days. There's really nothing wrong with putting coins like this in a circulated set. The sad part is that the coin has VF sharpness, but 95+% of the time it's going to be sold as an EF.

  • I agree with Bill... I've seen the seller of the first coin sell quite a few coins with color kinda like that (It's easy to spot his pictures, kinda a unique set-up... image). 2nd Looks like it's been cleaned to me, though, it's possible the contrast on the picture is out of wack, and it could actually be ok. Never know... as for pictures... sincee you asked for it... image
