1987 Constitution proof $5.00 gold. Does anyone like this coin?

I do! When I was younger I thought it was the coolest! I keep hearing how no one liked the ultra modern depiction of the eagle but I always enjoyed it. I picked one up cheap on ebay the other day. I don't really collect commems per se, but I just couldn't resist....!

Because so many were made it is little more than a bullion item. How cheap is cheap?

  • To answer your question, Yes, I do.

I think the obverse is a bit simplistic. but I think the eagle strikes a nice contrast. They're nice coins, whatever the price.

Well It is certified pr-69 ngc and I for for 105 I believe. I know it boils down to bullion but I like it anyway. (The raw ones in the box are actually about the same price for the 2 piece set but I wanted a certified one to fit in my case and I don't really care about the silver one.) Ok..... So maybe it wasn't REALLY cheap...! But considering I could relist it tomorrow and make a few bucks made it a deal to me. image

I have that coin and really like the design. I believe thats a Marcel Jovine design. He passed away recently if I remember. Who gives a rip about the bullion... Its art. The feather on the reverse of mine looks as if it was floating. So Yes I like that coin. Good thread.

I'm glad that it's not "worth" much more than bullion. Had it been produced in low quantity, I probably wouldn't have been able to afford this wonderfully designed coin. It's one of the few modern commemoratives that I like.

I think that both sides of the gold coin are pretty nice, especially the eagle. The obverse of the silver dollar is passible, but reverse looks like a set a bowling pins.

No. Of the late 80s commems, my favorite was the 200th anniv of Congress dollar coin. But I will say, of the dollar and $5 for the constitution, the $5 is better. The event deserved a better design than it got.
