I am a new member and spent a lot of time reading the forum without ever posting. After a while it seemed to me that there were certain groups of folks who consistently answered questions sarcastically, particularly if by "post numbers "you may have been deemed new or naive to certain aspects of the hobby. I think most people are easily turned off by this negativity. The forum is new to me but collecting coins is not. I have been collecting for 35 years off and on and still manage to learn something new about collecting every day! I've taken a few people to task about a comment or remark in private mail to avoid embarassment and only one had the courtesy to answer! Having said this I still enjoy the forum, but read a lot more than I post! Thanks, Mike
So many people throwing opinions around only to be proven wrong. Reminds me of a certain unslabbed obviously NOT Proof Morgan some Morgan "heavies" swore by several months ago - until all the dies were shown in the thread. Some refused to admit the obvious even after all the obverse dies were shown. JadeRareCoin - what is the word on the Columbian? I am curious to hear what you got back!
<< <i>A few weeks ago a new forum member by the name of "mogadeet" started a couple of threads regarding an inherited coin collection. It did not take long for him to get bashed by the forum posse and ran off of the forum. Here's the main thread where mogadeet was verbally lynched. Here's a related thread started by mogadeet. Since we are in the same approximate area (1 hour drive), I agreed to do the appraisal. We conversed through PM, then exchanged contact information. I met with mogadeet last week and I can tell you that everything he said was completely factual and his only motive for posting on this forum was to obtain qualified advice and gather information. Unfortunately, the main thing that he got was insulted....... Mogadeet has given me permission to post images of his inherited collection. All of the coins were indeed genuine, except for the very first coin that I examined; a crude cast copy of an 1878-CC dollar. All of the gold coins are genuine. We submitted several of the coins to ANACS for grading, which will prove helpful for mogadeet when he decides to sell the collection. There were some real surprises in the collection. For example, amongst a sea of G-VG common date Walking Liberty halves was an uncirculated 1918-D! Same thing with the Barber Halves, except it was a Choice AU-55 1915-P. The 1838 $10 Liberty is genuine and will grade VF-20 at ANACS. The story behind his collection was equally fascinating. Long story short: The coins belonged to mogadeet's grandfather and the collection was started in 1906. At that time, he was a bellman at the Post Tavern, which was an upscale hotel in Battlecreek, Michigan. He went on to be a bellhop at the then-famous Battlecreek Sanitarium, which was the resort that the Hollywood hit "Road To Wellville" was based upon. He worked there from the 1910's-20's. The vast majority of the collection came from tips received at the Sanitarium resort. It's guests were Hollywood stars, important political figures and even European royalty. Even the gold coins were tips. He also received fractional currency as tips and many, many Two Cent coins. That's fascinating, since it shows us that 2 cent coins circulated up until the 1930's. His grandfather stopped adding to the collection in 1942, and the coins stayed in the same safety deposit box until the 1970's. After that they were moved to a credit union where they remained in a safety box until recently, when he passed away and the coins became part of the estate. So, the lesson to everyone here is that we must be patient with new members on the forum and not be so quick to thrash people. Give someone the benefit of the doubt. Immediately accusing someone of something unethical is NOT the way to welcome new members to the boards. Mogadeet did NOTHING to warrant the abuse he received. How many potential posters (lurkers) saw his thread and were forever encouraged NOT to participate in this forum? If someone comes here will ill-intentions, then they will eventually show their true colors and will be booted (like that guy today with the virus). And now, here are some images: >>

Oh, are we starting this again, trouble-maker?
And it's still an 1895 Proof Billy, whether you like it or not. Not all the dies were shown, although the one I linked to that matched was convientantly ignored by the non-experts who never owned a Proof Morgan in their lives, but hey now decided they knew how to diagnose one by die variety alone using bad photos.
It's a shame that a few bad apples spoil the bunch. here's a person looking for help and gets picked on and insulted. jealousy rears it's ugly head. At least for those who were particularly unfair or mean. But I will say, as is always the case, most of the help offered was genuine and kind. Most people here are really good and in fact treated him fairly. As for those others, well I think you know what anatomically impossible act I would suggest you try.
