You have a good sense about you. In some ways, you remind me of Mohandas K. Gandhi in that you seem to know how to focus on the positives...
To the rest,
It does seem to me that the non-oldtimers seem quicker to chime in with a flip opinion on any and all issues. I wonder if the oldtimers here have developed a greater lack of interest in making flip comments because they've been there and done that. Or, due to their experience here, they know better than to make hasty judgements. In short, we oldtimers weren't always oldtimers here. (And, even oldtimers may make a flip comment on occasion.)

EVP, I think some of the newer members have been unduly influenced by some of the old timers who post a lot and like to attack with one-liners and get involved in arguements almost on a weekly basis.
Just a follow-up note to address several PM's we have received:
We did not purchase the collection, but rather just did the appraisal and submitted the coins to ANACS. The whole process was over 7 hours (including drive time), but it was A LOT OF FUN doing the work. Mogadeet's grandfather put together a great collection, and all from circulation!

<< <i>Thank you all very much! You're a nice group! You aren't the reason I am not going to be a coin collector. It is the $#@# coins that are stopping me. Inventorying that collection was like watching golf. >>
OK. Get out the noose, there's a hangin' ta be did.
...Or in the words of an early bard, "All's well that ends well".
a little perspective on golf ! you have a device the diameter of of a Morgan dollar about 5'9" from your eyes. your hands are fixed to a lever about 38 inches long that weighs about 500 grams (5 iron) total. you have to swing this thing in about a 6 foot arc at about 135 ft per second and contact the small device and propel it 540 feet to a target smaller than your front yard. OK !
Congrats on a great collection! Just as a reminder, here is my contribution to the original thread:
Hey - How about giving this guy the benefit of the doubt? His ability to use this forum for pics, sig lines, etc. is not surprising. FuseTalk is all over the net! Now, as to the coins, I agree with many of you that based on the pics they're probably fakes. Of course, it's a buyer beware situation (as always), but maybe he's legit. Further, if he's trying to rip someone off, why come here, where knowledgeable people hang out? His best chance to scam is on ebay!
Just my two-cents worth.

More people should jump in with statements like the above when the Mob starts its task around here.
Welcome back "mogadeet". Hey Coins and Golf are two of my favorites.
I just saw the images. In a word... WOW!!! Makes me wish I had a time machine.
I just read the older thread. Don't sweat it. I'm sure these guys have seen plenty of scams. I'd give them a mulligan. If you really want to see true forum nastiness in its vilest form, become a Red Sox fan posting on a Yankees forum.
Congrats on your hoard.
Kudos to JRC for being level headed throughout all of this.
I have bought (I think) just two coins from Dennis at Jade, one being moderately expensive. That coin was bought raw and I told Dennis I wanted it graded by PCGS. Dennis "guaranteed" that his raw grade would hold up at PCGS or I could have a full refund. Well, the coin graded exactly as Jade/Dennis said it would and is one of the very best coins in my collection. It is a Bust Half and I still have not seen one I like better.
I would like to buy more coins from Dennis but he knows I am looking for a certain "look" and he is very picky about what he even suggests. If anyone likes early US coinage, Jade/Dennis is a great place to start.
all these feel good stories have got me misty-eyed
yeah, right.
but still, Jade, you've been a class act since your first post, (albeit under the different nom de plume), and like coinguy, cardinal and the rest of the other real experts your input is always welcomed by those who appreciate the very best of this forum.
and of course congratulations and welcome to "moga"
Is it really so hard for all of us to give newbies the benefit of the doubt or at least keep our mouths shut before mentally, and then verbally, jumping to conclusions about whatever they post? Just because some of us have been "taken" by similar means, is it therefore a fact that all newbies with hoards of any kind are just shysters posing as ill-informed collectors? Many of us have had run-ins with a "less then helpful" dealer---does this mean all dealers are to be avoided?
MOST of us have a healthy amount of pessimism and it does seem to be prudent to acquire it if you don't already have it. But I try to always give an individual (OR dealer) the opportunity to show their true colors before making a judgement against them. Remember, I was the one who paid $700 for a eBay MS70FS Jeff. Did I stop buying on eBay? Nope. Did I learn a lesson? Not really---after all, I knew there were cheats, liars, scams aplenty before I paid for it. Did I stop buying raw? Nope. Still do and always will, and may get taken again. Still won't let it skew my desire for the hobby I love or the avenues available to buy/sell/trade in it.
I re-read the original post and counted 10 posters who were either overtly or indirectly slamming mogadeet and his coins. So far, only 2 have proffered up apologies. We all know who the other 8 are. I think they should do the adult and honorable thing posting their apologies also.
IrishMike, I'm in your boat or the other oar.
David
P.S. Forgot to give kudos to Jade for his unselfish assistance. And remember this gang! If moga wasn't such a forgiving individual, he may have found the other side of the street. We often get you guys "rejects" who turn out to be very nice people with a lot to add to the hobby!
Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.
Whether or not someone apologizes is up to them but the best form of an apology is to simply not do it the next time. This doesn't mean that we have to be completely trusting and positive all the time, but we can save the slams until there is real evidence that someone is a troll or is being less than truthfull and honest.
I apologize for not coming back to defend the newbie.
Glad to see that everything worked out for Mogadeet. The way people responded in the oringinal thread is why I seldom post anything concerning my collection anymore. Seems alot of people here are the type that if a coin I show is something they don't have or is better than something they have, it's either fake or I'm lying. I applaud Mogadeet on being the way he is.....a lesser person would have started to lash out at the nay-sayers.
Too bad you aren't more interested in coins, Moga, but I do understand your need(moneywise).
Thanks to everyone for all of the very positive comments regarding this situation. Please note that it was not my intention to draw negative attention to any of the forum members who posted negative comments in Mogadeets original thread. In fact, I consider some of those members friends and would not do anything to hurt them. Also, please read the title of this thread; "......and a lesson for the entire forum. Entire means everyone, including myself, since I have posted comments in the past that were not the classiest.
In summary, mogadeet's first thread here was a blessing in disguise, since the outcome was nothing but positive. I will make one last follow-up post when the coins return from ANACS, as some are interested in the grades of the Walker and Barber halves. (we do not own the coins....they belong to mogadeet).
I think sometimes we just need to put the breaks on the bashing and become a little bit more circumspect of the situation. Newbies are not always going to have a good grasp of the business and thus may make things sound off the wall - but unless you see a blatant fraud (which are usually on Ebay) then let's give new people coming in here a little space. Hell - look at how much space we gave Greg the Great!
Wow! This is a thread from the past that I had forgotten about. I did promise to make one final post, but I must get permission from mogadeet before revealing any information about his coins. The collection was not sold, but rather remained in the family. Our job was to simply appraise the coins. Is was a real pleasure working with mogadeet and the experience overall was a memorable one. I will ask permission to post grades and then do so (hopefully).
Jade: Your "Top Shelf" and the reason I , and many others, think this is "The Best" Coin Forum, Period!!!!! Hopefully, some "Lessons Learned"? and "Welcome" to Mogadeet!!!! Lee

It's too bad you aren't interested in coins. It's a great hobby that most of us here are passionate about.
None the less, I hope you make a pretty penny (ha ha) from the sell of your grandfathers collection. He was wise to set aside these special coins.
Best of luck.
