Update on new member "mogadeet"........and a lesson for the entire forum

A few weeks ago a new forum member by the name of "mogadeet" started a couple of threads regarding an inherited coin collection. It did not take long for him to get bashed by the forum posse and ran off of the forum. Here's the main thread where mogadeet was verbally lynched. Here's a related thread started by mogadeet.

Since we are in the same approximate area (1 hour drive), I agreed to do the appraisal. We conversed through PM, then exchanged contact information. I met with mogadeet last week and I can tell you that everything he said was completely factual and his only motive for posting on this forum was to obtain qualified advice and gather information. Unfortunately, the main thing that he got was insulted.......

Mogadeet has given me permission to post images of his inherited collection. All of the coins were indeed genuine, except for the very first coin that I examined; a crude cast copy of an 1878-CC dollar. All of the gold coins are genuine. We submitted several of the coins to ANACS for grading, which will prove helpful for mogadeet when he decides to sell the collection. There were some real surprises in the collection. For example, amongst a sea of G-VG common date Walking Liberty halves was an uncirculated 1918-D! Same thing with the Barber Halves, except it was a Choice AU-55 1915-P. The 1838 $10 Liberty is genuine and will grade VF-20 at ANACS.

The story behind his collection was equally fascinating. Long story short: The coins belonged to mogadeet's grandfather and the collection was started in 1906. At that time, he was a bellman at the Post Tavern, which was an upscale hotel in Battlecreek, Michigan. He went on to be a bellhop at the then-famous Battlecreek Sanitarium, which was the resort that the Hollywood hit "Road To Wellville" was based upon. He worked there from the 1910's-20's. The vast majority of the collection came from tips received at the Sanitarium resort. It's guests were Hollywood stars, important political figures and even European royalty. Even the gold coins were tips. He also received fractional currency as tips and many, many Two Cent coins. That's fascinating, since it shows us that 2 cent coins circulated up until the 1930's. His grandfather stopped adding to the collection in 1942, and the coins stayed in the same safety deposit box until the 1970's. After that they were moved to a credit union where they remained in a safety box until recently, when he passed away and the coins became part of the estate.

So, the lesson to everyone here is that we must be patient with new members on the forum and not be so quick to thrash people. Give someone the benefit of the doubt. Immediately accusing someone of something unethical is NOT the way to welcome new members to the boards. Mogadeet did NOTHING to warrant the abuse he received. How many potential posters (lurkers) saw his thread and were forever encouraged NOT to participate in this forum? If someone comes here will ill-intentions, then they will eventually show their true colors and will be booted (like that guy today with the virus).

And now, here are some images:

I agree Placid.....that was very cool of you JRC!
I read the original thread.....(lurked you might say)....and was amazed by the story but thought it would be cool.

I am very glad that mogadeet had you and you were willing to look at them.
An instant collection and inheritance to be proud of.

I know there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this board, and that many have been burned, but it is a shame that the first thing that people want to do is to castrate a new person who seems to have had some really good luck. When in doubt, I remain silent.

Mogadeet, if you are reading this at all......GOOD FOR YOU!

Yup. People here can get bad. I disappeared for almost 2 years because of the abuse I took. I was VERY new to slabs and made a comment that I was amazed at how inexpensive ACG coins were and I was called everything in the book for reasons I didn't understand at the time. It's easy for people to get insulting and abusive when they're sitting behind a monitor hundreds of miles away. Te same conversations wouldn't happen 99.9% of the time in person.

  • Russ, no 1870's in the group of 2-centers. All were circulated below VF.

Razor, he's probably in his 50's or so. The 18-D and the 15-P halves were very original (never messed with). Both are frosty.

Thanks to everyone who posted postive comments in this thread!

I will post the ANACS grades then the coins return in a week or so.

I feel shame to be associated with such ill tempered people. Thier names are all there in the thread. There does appear to be a "main pack" here. I am not one of those people. I can't believe the elitist comments that came from people on this board. Jade, I am glad you are helping him. It is a wonderful story. I think there is a fact of life that many downers did not take into account. Everyone dies eventually. This guys grandfather happened to put together a better set than many here just by pulling from circulation. How many people can say thier collection was pulled from circulation? I got a coin collection when my Father passed. He pulled it from circulation. There were no gold eagles or St Gaudens in there but each piece ties me to him. Just like this fellas collection. Now he is gone and probably will not be back. I don't blame him. For those in the thread that ran this fella off, get some humility.

Jade that was very nice of you to help the guy out.

Now a minor comment about the original thread. Going through the thread it was noticed that some sound advice was given by some of the Very Old Time people here. Then all of a sudden a guy starts calling the intentions of this fellow fishy. Then as usual a bunch of the newer members here jumped on the band wagon with their insults. Thats about par for the course here in the last couple of years. People wonder why more coin people do not participate here. This original thread is a damn good illustration why more people do not want to participate. End of rant.

By the way. It is very nice that all has worked out in a positive way.

There's a reason why the coin hobby doesn't grow. I'd say a good 1/3 of all dealers or experts are arrogant and belittle newbies to the hobby. My first experience with a coin dealer 4 years ago was with an arrogant SOB that didn't even want you to waste his time unless you were planning on spending $100. The first time I walked into his store I asked about buying an uncirculated SLQ and he laughed saying "You being young I can already tell you that coin is WAAY out of your league." Well, I was 30 at the time which is youn, but not so young that I can't afford nice coins. I walked out of his store while he and his buudy/customer laughed. Thankfully I went to another local shop and a 79 year old man runs the place and is the most helpful person I ever met. He got me on the right road in collecting and enjoys people sitting in his little 12x15 shop and discussing the hobby for hours.

  • When I first met with mogadeet, I immediately apologized on behalf of the forum for the way he was treated. He chuckled and said, "oh, it's no big deal. I can understand that people must come to the forum to rip people off all of the time. I know that I probably sounded suspicious.". In other words, he actually defended those who attacked him. Now THAT'S a nice guy!

I see a couple of offers to BUY his coins

But I never once saw him offer to SELL his coins.

Perhaps he knew somebody would try to rip a newbie on a rare date so I guess his plan was beautifully executed.

    Mogadeet -
Get your self a Redbook and identify what you have. Then the best advice is from Placid-

Still there was no need for the way he was treated. Just read his comments in the original thread. It appears he was on the up and up all along and agreed with a poster when it was mentioned that maybe the Gold Coins were Fake.

Honestly folks out of 100 people you meet casually how many know what a SLQ is. Being stupid about coins runs rampant in this country.

Great for mogadeet and kudos to you, Dennis, for lending a hand.

I'm embarrassed to look back at the original thread. I remember reading it, and by that time there were already a few good informative replies. I didn't see that it deteriorated later. As a result, I'm going to watch those types of threads more closely.

I agree that we shouldn't be so quick to jump on people. My goodness, we badmouth dealers for being rude to people, and we were just as guilty in that thread. I hope we can do better representing the hobby in the future.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Jade you rock. Im glad you helped Moga out and I hope he wasnt soured by the asswipes here who took it upon themselves o take pot shots at him. I did notice alot of the pot shots came from realitivley newbies, but still all who participated should be ashamed of themselves. I posted without consent from the owner news about a found hoard and was the subject of ridicule for the longest. It almost cost me the friendship or this person, as well as outcasting by family who are friends with him also. I learned 2 lessons from that: 1) people are jealous BIGTIME in this arena and lash out by crying fake or BS 2) There a few friends on this board and Ill never share info or anything of the like with most here due to the fact. I hope those who I do deal with know this isnt directed at them, Im just pissed cause Ive been there and can imagine how this poor guy must feel. Now I probably wont even get a chance to know him cause the clowns on this board who couldnt afford what they called FAKE.

    shame on ya

Jade you are a true friend, and please let moga know all arnt clowns here.

  • Greetings!
No, I wasn't driven out of this forum. For every flame there are 50 gems. Remember this people, I read and remember ALL the excellent information I got.

    1. I got my redbook, and when the U.S. coins are done will get the greenbook and start in on the pile of foreigns (the U.S. coins were 75% of the horde).
    2. I got an idea on how to present it, and was motivated to put it in a form that poor, overwoked Jade would be able to deal with. THAT information came from this forum!
    3. I got hooked up with JadeRareCoin. If it wasn't for this forum I never would have heard of him. Hey, guys, I'm not a coin collector.
    4. I was steered clear of a number of idiotic and stupid things an otherwise well-meaning person would do to coins like that.

This forum, despite the few people with the badly tuned stadium horns, gave me SO MUCH valuable and essential information. When you're being showered with diamonds, the occasionally lump of coal is rarely noticed.

Thank you all very much! You're a nice group! You aren't the reason I am not going to be a coin collector. It is the $#@# coins that are stopping me. Inventorying that collection was like watching golf.

Forgive me, but if you will tolerate a small self indulgence please?
