    Very beautiful coin, Caitlin. Extraordinary strike for a '13-S. The photograph emphasizes the upper protion of the coin on the obverse and reverse. Does a great job of capturing the color but leaves off some of the detail that is evidently there. Some of the tell-tale signs are the great separation of LIBERTY from the rim, which is rare on a T1 nickel. Superb definition of the Indian's long featherand all of the detail of the hair knot and the incuse lines above it. The lines of the robe are tough to see, but studied carefully, they are clearly there. Superb detail in the bison's hair - both head and mane. The mane extends fully down the bison's shoulder, which is tough on a '13-S T1 (and also tough to photograph, usually appearing flat at the shoulder). Great definition in the bison's haunches and the back leg shows clear separation from the field. Fields of the obverse and reverse are wonderful, not fatigued, and show the details that Fraser intended. Excellent. Clearly an MS67 coin.

    Gradewise (and, hence, strike-wise) their's beats the hell out of mine. I do the best I can with, it seems, a more limited budget. I haven't seen all of Caitlin's coins so I can't say but Wihlborg's set is incredible. That 26-D he has just pisses me off. image

    Heh. I was going to show a picture of it but I chickened out. You seemed to have access to a larger picture so it worked out better. Put up the 17-D too! Another coin of his that just ticks me off.

    WOW that 26-d is a very nice Buff. ms66? I think I've seen this coin before, infact it might have been mine at one time. It was one of those coin I wished I had never sold.
    Thanks for all the nice comments and Jom and Hoot thanks for the images and kind words as well. It's nice to see other buffs. and I wish collectors would post more of them, so keep them coming.

    This 1913 toned Buff came from Pinnacle and grades as an ms66. I should have it in hand by the weekend, hopefully it as nice as the image, I'll keep you posted.image

    Nice color coins, but the strikes are so soft. I would be interested in a poll to find out what collectors look for more on buffalos strike or color.

    Caitlin - both the 26-D and the 17-D are MS 64 and from the Wihlborg Collection of buffalo nickels, 1913-1938. image

    Vitaminguy - You are right that the strikes on the 26-D (obv. rims, rev.) and the 17-D (central obv./rev.) are a bit soft, but the trade-off is for totally original surfaces with excellent toning. The fellow collector to whom these belong is one of those who will go for originality and color before full strike. There are others who feel differently, like yourself, and that's great, because it leaves us all room to collect these beauties! Although I've never seen Wihlborg's coins in person, I have heard that they simply leap at you when you see them - full of luster! He's also a very knowledgeable collector - one of the best! image

    Vitaminguy: Adding to what Hoot said, it also has to do with COST. A big thing with me. Generally speaking if I can only afford only the MS63 grade you will lose out somewhere on the coin: luster, strike or hits. I personally would rather have a lusterous coin with some color than a dull full strike piece. Look at my 26-D (see the link Hoot gave), gem obverse and mushy mush mush reverse, MS63 STAR holder. Those are the things each of us must pick and choose as we try to put a set together. It makes the search more interesting and fun, IMO.
