ANACS

Well I sent in my $5 indian coin to ANACS today. Tommarrow I'm going to help raise more money for the door. I sent it in an airtight, (Is this okay to send it in? Would they take it out and grade it?). Last time I tried to open the airtight, I closed it so hard I had to bite it open, then pry it open with my fingers. The total cost $33, (I think I totalled it right).

I thought you were going to take the coin back for a refund to pay your parents for the door you broke and then wait and get a certified $5 indian?

Honestly, I don't know why you didn't take the advice of members and return the coin... you now have $273 into a type coin that we've established can be had for much less... in addition, you're tight for money.

    Wrong move, IMO...

  • ANACS may charge you a higher fee if you sent it in an airtight, they want their coins in a polybag and the polybag placed inside a 2 X 2 flip. I'm sure it will still be graded, but they may contact you about the packaging of it.

I wanted to return it, but my parents would not drive me back to vegas.

Not true, polybags aren't needed. Plus they ruin your proofs.

I wonder if ANACS denotes bite and pry marks that are on coins.
If they do, please scan the slab and post the pic here. That will be real interesting.

  • Hmm... I wonder how they would denote teeth marks... just damage?

I tried to convince my mom to drive back home so I could get a flip! Grr. Any idea how much the fee will cost? My parents think its ridiculous that they'd charge you extra for something like that, but oh well..

  • Parents just said if they charge extra that is "The end of ANACS".
  • Learn a little common sense. Before submitting a coin to a TPG, do a little research. I've never submitted a coin to any TPG, but yet I know, because I researched it. All the information about submitting is right there on the web site of every major TPG. Actually, before you spend any money, research it. On a coin, on a game, on a computer. Look it up, see what other people think. And most importantly, TAKE PEOPLES ADVICE! Would you buy a game that all your friends said was the worst game in the world? Or a computer that all the reviewers said had lots of problems?

The services want 2.5 x 2.5... much easier to remove coins safely.

The fee is probably a buck or two... and the charge is justified--they're hard to open and pose a risk to the coins. No reason that risk should come from their pocket.

US Mail is a fantastic service... you can even use a telephone to tell the store the coin is coming back!

But as George said... research things in the future. In a few minutes, someone on the board found a certified AU55 for $40 less than you paid raw (not including you now paying for ANACS). If I could offer any advice to you, don't buy any coins for at least 4 months... PERIOD. Buy a Red Book. Read it. Buy a grading book. Read it. Go to a show and just look at coins. Open posts here. Read them.

Acquire knowledge. Buy. To do it any other way is foolish, and a guaranteed risk... I promise you'll lose if you don't do your homework.

You're paying $273 for a 1908 $5 Indian to be graded by ANACS that may/may not grade AU55.

Of course we have all learned the same way you are learning and would have been ahead of the game if we'd read "Coin Collecting for Dummies" ourselves first. Coin Collecting for Dummiesimage

  • The end of ANACS over a flip? Are your parents nuts? You saying they are going to sue over a platic flip because YOU couldn't remember to send in your submission the right way?

How many times are you gonna send this one off to ANACS, after you drop the holder and break it, or use it for a doorstop, or throw it at the wall?
