The Order of Malta coins are really neat and can often be found at very favorable prices.

Watch out for those Swiss coins! Some of the "easy" ones will throw you. Especially the
cu/ni and the smaller denominations from the early fifties and late forties.

<< <i>I can't find any good information on the internet about this Malta coin, guess I need a Krause >>

Actually, the Krause you need for that is not the brand new 2005 32d Ed.image

Completely missing from the imageimage 32nd are the 11-1/3 pages devoted to the Sovereign Order of Malta (which like Vatican City is located wholly within the City of Rome), in the infamous imageimage 30th Ed.image

Anyhow, your 1 Scudo matches the reverse of both:

    KM#M5, a 33mm, 12g, .0869 silver (.3804 ASW) 1962 or 1963 proof with a crowned shield and the legend "F. ANGELVS DE MOJANA M M H H" on the obverse; and

KM#M9, a 1964 coin with the same specifications, but the bust of a uniformed person on the obverse.

M5 mintage and value in the imageimage 30th Ed. are 200, valued at $100 in 1962, and 600 valued at $30 in 1963. For M9 the numbers are 4,000 Uncirculated at $10 and 1,000 Proof at $12.50.

Neither Krause edition translates the Latin(?) "Bapt Ora Pro Nobis", it's not listed in my legal dictionery, and my last high school Latin class was 55 years ago.image

Anyhow, relax, lean back, and enjoy the darkside, since once you dip your toe in the dark waters, you're hooked for life.image

The call of the darkside...it is strong image. Next you might find yourself trying a one coin per country set (first step, define 'country'). Welcome, and cool coins!

  • The Malta coin should be pictured with the words '1 Scudo' at the bottom. The coin features the decapitated head of the martyr John the Babtist. I think this incident may have been the orignator of the phrase 'bring me his head on a platter'.

Maybe the orientation is correct? John the Baptist's head on a platter has been shown "sideways" in the past on Malta coins.

D'oh! Now I get it. You were saying the coin is shown rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise in the picture from its correct position.

    I should read more carefully.image
