Vintage hockey trivia and unbreakable records

1. Vintage (1900-1988) hockey trivia

Two of the greatest players to ever come out of French Canada
were born on the same exact day. Who were they ?
Hint....One played for the Canadiens

2. Unbreakable records........What's yours ?

My vote goes to the NHL having 6 brothers who played in the league.
The Sutters record will never be tied or broken IMO.

    1. don't know. i couldn't even find the answer by looking on hhof.com

    2. Sawchuk's shutout mark, , Henri Richard's Cup wins, and Gretzky's career scoring mark

Roy and Lemieux is the answer to the trivia question.

Not sure about my own choice for record most likely to be unbreakable. Six Sutter Brudders is a good choice. Howe's longevity mark might stand forever too. Ninety-two goals looks pretty imposing in the current NHL, but the pendulum could always swing back toward a more freewheelin' offensive game so I can't say that Gretzky's records are entirely safe.

  • I was going to guess French toast & French fries as I don't know squat about French Canada, but I guess we already have an answer for #1.

As for an unbreakable record I'll have to go with Glenn Hall's consecutive starts in goal. Ain't never gonna happen again. Hell, they stop the game now if the guy's mask falls off!! Buncha pansies!! Used to be if there wasn't bone poking through the skin, they kept on playing, and sometimes they just tucked the bone back in & kept playing!!

The way Brodeur is playing, he may actually get close to Sawchuk's shutout record! If they acknowledge the fact that the WHA was a real league, then I think Bobby Hull has more goals than Gretzky (certainly not more points!). 11 cup wins will probably never happen again either in this era of relative parity.

I think Sawchuk's shutout mark is going down. Unless Brodeur gets hurt or we have a real surge in scoring it will be in doubt

I agree i cant see anyone having 11 Cup Wins or beating Gretzky's point record

Glenn Hall's 502 Consecutive goalie games (without a mask as well) will never be beaten

If you ever have a chance to meet Glenn Hall ask him if he ever got his barn painted. Every year he hated training camp so he would hold out saying he wasnt sure if was going to play this year and say he had to paint his barn.
  • I think the rookie goal mark set by Teemu when he was with Winnipeg will never be broken. I mean really anyone going to get 76 goals again as a rookie?????

    Man o' Man,

The people on this board really know their hockey.

Agreed about the 11 cups by Henri Richard.

I think the one record we are forgetting is
the Philadelphia Flyers unbeaten streak in 1979-80.
Was it 35 games in a row without a loss ?

Who could ever do that nowadays ?

    Keep the awesome ubreakables coming.

i would say mosienko's record of the 3 fastest goals would be tough to accomplish again, 21 seconds!
most goals scored by a team ? 16 by montreal!
the flyers unbeaten streak was 35 games.btw pittsburgh owns the longest win streak at 17. that seems like tough to duplicate?
doug jarvis has the iron man record at 964 consecutive games played. steve larmer would probably have beat it if it wasn't for his holdout.
gretzky's 92 goals will be broke maybe not in my lifetime but i would say someone will get hot! hull almost did it with 86 not too long ago.
a guy like bure with speed, hands and a wicked shot could do it but there is that desire thing!

  • There's one obvious one in the parity ridden NHL today that you will never see again (and it's only happened once in the NHL)--the HABS 5 straight cups in the 50's. Edmonton could have done it, but us Canadiens fans have Steve Smith the thank for that one!

The year Gretzky scored 92 he really slumped down the stretch that year. I remember being disappointed that he didnt get 100

gretzky's 50 in 39 games seems pretty safe for now. you never know though?

A game standard that will undoubtably never be matched is Darryl Sittler's 10 point night. 6 goals and 4 assists. The Bruins goalie played his last game that night.

In the Gretzky-Lemieux heyday if you mentioned shutouts or goals against average records people would have thought you were crazy. Now, all the records being broken are by goaltenders. In the good old days of hockey pools we used to have Gretzky's goals and the ever popular first pick of Gretzky's assists.

A couple of different records I like are most assists by a goaltender in one season - Grant Fuhr 14
Most shots on goal in one season - Phil Esposito 550
And one I am not certain about but Bobby Orr had a +/- one season of over 100. That would be an awfully difficult record to break.

    Thanks Aro,

    Bobby Orr had a +/-
of over 100 one season image

    That is sick.

  • Mosienko's 3 goals in 21 seconds has to be the toughest. Although, I consider that to be a rather obcure record. It's a fluke really.

Probably thetoughest "real" record in my mind has always been 22 shutouts by George Hainsworth in 1928. The remarkable part of the record is that he only played 44 games. That's just sick!!

Joe Malone scoring 7 goals in a game is pretty rewarkable when you consider just how few were scored in his day.
