The grades of the 1967 nickels has me confused. I had compared the nickels to other late 1960 MS66 nickels and they were as good or better. Also two of the nickels were as close to full steps as I have ever seen on a 1967 Jefferson (I did not believe they would be graded FS, but it would have been quite a suprise if it happened). In fact before I saw these two I really thought the die pressure for the 1967 Jefferson was never high enough to produce a Full Step example. Now I am renewed in my expectation that there existed some (perhaps only a handful) full step 1967 nickels and I hope that some mint state examples still exist.

The 54-S nickel from the first submission and the MS65 1967 nickel will be placed into my collection. I am uncertain what I will do with the others.

The 54-S Jeff in 66 is a tough coin!
    When in doubt, don't.

I had checked the three against mid 50's PCGS examples in MS66 and they all looked like they would make MS66. I must have missed something on the two and will have to take a closer look and compare them to the MS66. I am happy with the lot. I will probably end up selling all the coins except the 54-S MS66.

    I got the coins today.

The 1967 MS65 is the coin with the best fields. The two that were near full step came back MS63 and MS64.

The MS66 1954-S is actually the second best (bag marks wise) 1954-S nickel that I submitted. I looked at the portrait and the monticello and the fields. One of the MS65 has about the same amount of portrait ticks and the same amount of monticello ticks and the fields are cleaner than the MS66. However the strike on the MS65 is weak. I believe that this is what kept it from also reaching the coveted MS66. The other 1954-S MS65 I held under a very strong light and rolled the coin clockwise and counter clockwise and noticed a bag mark above the monticello that I did not notice before. It was graded right with the MS65 designation.

One of the things I have noticed after looking at the coins (1967 MS65 and 1954-S MS66) is that the 1967 looks like the better coin. Strike is about the same and the devices are cleaner and the fields are cleaner too. The only thing I can think of is different graders handled each submission. Maybe in the future I will resubmit the 1967.
  • It sounds like an educational experience. It is tough to make high grade Jefferson nickels.

Every coin I have sent pre-1900 has been body bagged. I'll stick with Mercury Dimes 1916-1945.

I hope to send in my $20 1897 double eagle soon. But hope to get my registry set coins graded first, because they are needed now. May be why so many being sent are modern coins. Just a thought. image

For last quarter's free Coin of the Quarter I sent in an 1875-s 20c piece. I thought is would grade AU-55 and was pleased when it came back AU58.

High grade, FS Jefferson Nickels are SUPER tough to find,if you miss your grade and miss on steps, you have some very expensive paperweights!I still have a batch to send that I never got around to, but my gums are still bleeding from my first Jefferson Nickel submission.image
