Yep, if they are very high quality, slab away.
  • Actually the flat packs look pretty good, except
the luster is a little flat
are these known to be somewhat milkey ?

The 1971-S is by far the lowest quality date of all the "blue Ike" dates. I would not slab unless they look acceptional.

Yes. Alot of times that milky look is PVC. I have had several "blue Ikes" that I sent to PCGS in the original mint package body bagged for PVC.
  • These are rare in MS67 (big bucks) and above. If you think they would grade at least MS66, I'd slab them.

I have gone thru alot of 1971-S Ikes. The majority of these coins are of bad quality. They have fingerprints, white smears, heavy white spots, PVC, alot of rim dings, scratches, nics, ect. Of all US Unc issue coinage, this has to be one of the worst. I have never been able to get an MS67 grade out of PCGS from all of the ones I had submitted. All the ones I sent in, I had to dip to remove the smears, fingerprints and white spots and not all will come off. The majority that have come back have been ms66 with a few in ms65. If the coins have great deatil front and back and no physical damage at all, send it for grading. If you really think that they will grade MS67, definitely go ahead and send to NCS then to PCGS.

i dealt in high grade Walkers in the 80's so i aint exactly a green horn here !
i will get the loupe and let you know the fate,ms 67 is a high dollar piece, would be nice to make some !
the Brown box looks like a waste of money to slab ?
    common as dirt ?

  • BTW, on the brown proof Ikes, these are fairly common in PR69DCAM and below. Your choice.

  • Dip in Jeweluster for the white spots and Acetone for the green. You do not need to rinse after the Acetone(at least with Kleen Strip brand)!

Oh, I forgot to add. I never had any luck with Brown Ikes, but I got what I paid for, brown drabby looking ikes...and they were in sealed boxes. I had come across some nice toned BrownBox Ikes. They usually come in a rainbow ring both obv and rev. So, keep an eye out for those as they are always collecible even if they are not DCAM or CAM.

BTW, it is an M249 SAW. Uses a 5.56 round which is same as M16/M4. We had to borrow an Armored humvee on this day due to hostilities but had no 240G (the new M60) or the .50 Cal that was supposed to be attached to the vehicle. As you can see in the pic. I have my bi-pod down and that is what I am using to stablize the weapon behind the shield. Twenty minutes later, some Iraqi through a grenade at the vehicle and I lost my hearing for the day and some for life.

Huh. What did ya say? imageimage
  • Ah,i see the bipod and the snail mag now !

And while we are at it.
Today is D-Day plus 60 yrs,so Semper gets a big HOO RAH and all the other vets get Kudos from the civies !

My Dad went in @ Normandy as a radio man,907th air eng. squadron, never would tell me what happened but he came home with two Bronze Stars.

I have complete Ike MS and PR PCGS registry sets (under "Dan Buchner"). I am missing just the 1972-P T1 in the MS varieties set (I'm STILL looking for one.).

The most fun I've had with the 71-S is buying two in PCI MS68 holders for about $40. each and having both cross with PCGS at MS67 and selling each at $500.00++ each.

As most have posted 71-S Ikes can be really crappy. I went threw many before I found one I liked. If they are PQ then slabbed the heck out of themimage Big Semper Fi gents!

I got a couple 1971-s Blue Packs today and when opening them, the first thought that came to my mind was PVC. Did the early GSA packs contain anything that would cause this hazing?

I don't know but I found this ngc write up mentioning the 'toning' in original packaging (at the bottom of article). Also mentions storage conditions.

Sometimes they turn in the holder.
